At the 2024 Summer Olympics on July 28 during the Women’s Gymnastics Qualifiers, Jade Carey experienced a fall due to illness. Afterward, the former gymnast came forward to support her fellow athletes with heartfelt remarks.
I understand how elated you must have felt after an exceptional performance today. I’m genuinely impressed and proud of your accomplishment! It’s disheartening to see how critically athletes are often judged in our society, making it necessary for some to defend themselves unnecessarily.
Aly, who has won six Olympic medals with the U.S. women’s gymnastics team, emphasized that Jade’s showing in Paris demonstrated she was human and it’s acceptable to make mistakes.
The 30-year-old expressed eagerness, saying, “I’m looking forward to seeing more of you soon,” and added, “I hope you’ll get well soon. You’re an inspiration to many, and don’t forget that there are people at home who aspire to be like you.”
And Jade was clearly feeling the love, replying, “Awe thank you aly. you’re the best!”
24-year-old athlete, participating in the Paris games with teammates Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, and Hezly Rivera, shared post-performance thoughts, revealing that she’s been dealing with illness during competition preparations.
She shared with Olympics.com that she hadn’t been feeling good for the past few days, leaving her without an appetite. Her energy levels were low today, and she struggled to make sense of her thoughts.
In her own words, Jade expressed that she felt the need to let others understand that there was indeed an issue at hand.
In addition to that, Jade didn’t forget to convey her gratitude for fans’ unwavering support.
She expressed surprise and gratitude on Instagram after our floor routine: “Today wasn’t the day I had planned, but I can’t express enough appreciation for your love and support. I’m incredibly proud of my team and our achievements today. We still have more to accomplish.”
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, I was fortunate enough to bring home the gold medal in the women’s floor exercises. I’d like to clarify for my dear fans that my stellar performance wasn’t a result of overcoming the “twisties,” a challenge I’ve discussed before.
In the interview with Elle (published on July 17), she expressed that many of us encounter this situation. It’s frustrating, she said, as you can visualize yourself performing the action correctly in your mind, and you know you have the skills because you’ve done it before. However, for some reason, your body just won’t comply.
She explained that in challenging situations, her approach has been to temporarily withdraw, reassess, rebuild, and regain full confidence before moving forward again. Although it can be disheartening to take steps back, she recognizes it as an essential aspect of the sports experience.

In simpler terms, Jordan Chiles, named after basketball legend Michael Jordan, began gymnastics at six and progressed through competitions, collecting trophies as she went. However, despite her achievements, the 23-year-old often faced racial discrimination and felt unwelcome. In an interview with ELLE in July 2024, Chiles recalled being bullied and feeling like she didn’t belong in gymnastics. After considering quitting, Simone Biles invited her to train at her Texas gym in 2018. Reflecting on the past, Chiles stated that she wishes she could relive those experiences but acknowledges that they made her stronger and more confident. Fast-forward a few years, and they both competed at the 2020 Olympics, taking home the team silver. Additionally, Chiles gained popularity with a perfect 10 performance at the 2023 NCAA Championships set to 90s hip-hop music and secured a spot at the 2024 Olympics with a Beyoncé-inspired routine.
Jade Carey is grateful to her parents, who owned a gym and introduced her to the sport at a young age, for her gymnastics journey. Born in 1997, she began training in 2002 and competed at an elite level starting in 2017. In the 2020 Olympics, she finished eighth place on vault due to footwork issues, but bounced back with a gold medal win in the floor exercise event. Carey, from Arizona, remains determined and aims for redemption at the 2024 Olympics after an unexpected experience left her yearning for more achievements.
Hezly Rivera is set to participate in her first Olympics experience. This achievement comes just under two months after she turned 16, making her the youngest athlete on the US team for the 2024 Games. In an interview with TopMob News last July, Rivera shared her excitement: “I was elated because all my hard work had finally paid off. I couldn’t believe it when they announced my name.”
Joscelyn Roberson, a talented 18-year-old gymnast from Texas, has earned the position as one of two travel replacement athletes for the 2024 U.S. Olympic women’s team. Her excitement is palpable as she expressed on Instagram, “This is it! I am going to Paris!! Dreams truly do come true. See you all there!”
20-year-old Leanne Wong hails from Kansas and serves as a traveling substitute athlete for the 2024 women’s gymnastics team at the Olympics. Initially, she was an alternate for the 2020 Games in Tokyo. However, when fellow alternate Kara Eaker tested positive for COVID-19, they both had to isolate.
