Top Gun 3: Release date speculation and latest news

As a long-time film enthusiast with a deep appreciation for the iconic Top Gun franchise, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard that a third installment was officially in the works! The release of Top Gun: Maverick in 2022 not only revived our love for these high-flying action films but also left us craving more.

Top Gun 3 is officially happening.

As a longtime fan of Top Gun, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard the news that Paramount was working on a third installment in the series. And to make it even more thrilling, Ehren Kruger, who co-wrote the successful sequel Top Gun: Maverick, is penning the script! It’s an incredible feeling knowing that we’ll get another dose of high-flying action and heartfelt storytelling from this talented team. Bring it on!

Details have since been scarce, but now Glen Powell has offered an exciting production update.

In an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Daisy Edgar-Jones, her Twisters costar Powell revealed that he has set a beginning date for shooting Top Gun 3.

As a passionate cinephile, when posed with the question of which one might come out sooner – another season of Normal People or a fresh installment of Top Gun – here’s what I can share: “Well, I do have a planned release date.”

So when could we expect Top Gun 3? Read on for everything you need to know about the film.

The film might officially be in development, but there’s no official release date as yet.

In May, Jerry Bruckheimer expressed doubt that Top Gun 3 would begin production shortly, as Tom Cruise is currently occupied with various other film commitments.

As a seasoned screenwriter myself, I can appreciate the excitement and anticipation that comes with sharing a great story idea. Having worked in this industry for many years, I know how valuable it is to have someone like Tom express interest in your concept. Hearing his words, “I really like that,” is music to any writer’s ears. It validates the hours of brainstorming, outlining, and refining the storyline. With this endorsement, we are now eagerly developing the project, hoping to create something truly special for audiences to enjoy.

Based on my experience working in the film industry, I can relate to the uncertainty of when a project with Tom Cruise might get off the ground. With his busy schedule, juggling high-profile films like Mission: Impossible and other projects, it’s always a wait-and-see situation for those involved. Fingers are crossed that we’ll receive a screenplay that truly resonates with him, allowing us to soar into production once again.

Fans will be pleased to know that the time difference between the first and second Top Gun movies is 36 years, but they probably won’t have to endure such a lengthy wait. Tom Cruise’s age (being 89 by then) makes it highly unlikely for the sequel to take that long to release.

It took approximately a year to shoot the sequel, and if production for Top Gun 3 started in 2021, its release is unlikely before 2026 at the earliest.

Who could star in Top Gun 3? Our speculation

In the upcoming sequel, I’m set to reprise my role as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, with Miles Teller returning as Bradley ‘Rooster’ Bradshaw.

2022 saw the premiere of Top Gun: Maverick, during which Rooster showed a desire to resume his character’s role again.

Glen Powell announced recently that he’ll rejoin the film production, which was previously confirmed in January 2024.

In an interview with Variety, Powell shared: “I can’t reveal all the exciting things we have in store just yet, but get ready for some enjoyable announcements soon.”

1. “I frequently communicate with Joseph Kosinski, Tom Cruise, and Jerry Bruckheimer. They’re working on some projects, and everything seems incredibly thrilling.” (This version maintains the conversational tone while providing a clearer picture of the ongoing activities.)

Based on my own experiences, I can’t predict exactly when I’ll be able to return… But I have faith that at some point in the future, a jet will be ready and waiting for me.

Further, we can anticipate acting performances from Jennifer Connelly as Penny, Lewis Pullman portraying Robert ‘Bob’ Floyd, and Monica Barbaro depicting Natasha ‘Phoenix’ Trace. Jon Hamm may reappear in the role of Vice Admiral Beau ‘Cyclone’ Simpson.

As fans will remember, Val Kilmer’s Iceman met a grisly end, so he’s unlikely to be back.

1. Off-screen, Ehren Kruger, who collaborated on Top Gun: Maverick’s screenplay, is busy developing the script further, while it’s anticipated that Joseph Kosinski, the film’s director, will be back for the sequel as well.
