LEGO Star Wars: The Dark Falcon Review: Reimagining a Sci-Fi Icon

As a long-time Star Wars fan and LEGO enthusiast, I was thrilled to get my hands on the new LEGO Star Wars: The Dark Falcon set. Bag 12 really took this build to the next level for me with the addition of the sturdy legs and laser cannon turrets. The attention to detail in recreating the Millennium Falcon’s screen-accurate cannons is impressive, and I love that they have a wide range of motion. Plus, the turret seats are a nice touch for younger fans who want to imagine engaging in epic space battles.

1. From its debut in “Star Wars: A New Hope” back in 1977, Han Solo’s iconic spaceship, the Millennium Falcon, has held a significant place in science fiction films. It is cherished not only for its role in the galaxy, but also for its unique design. For decades, young fans have attempted to replicate the ship using LEGO, and LEGO itself has produced several different builds of varying sizes to honor the vessel. However, later this year, the Disney+ animated special “LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy” is set to shake up everything we thought we knew about the franchise by transforming the Millennium Falcon into The Dark Falcon.

In “LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy,” an ordinary nerf-herder named Sig Greebling (played by Gaten Matarazzo) stumbles upon a powerful artifact in a concealed Jedi temple, leading him on an exhilarating journey through a chaotic galaxy. Good and evil have switched places, making this wondrously unpredictable universe a twisted version of the Star Wars Galaxy we know. Sig must embrace his heroic role to restore balance and save everyone by piecing together the shattered order.

Excitedly, I can’t wait to share the joy! In anticipation of the upcoming event, LEGO has unveiled The Dark Falcon set, along with a thrilling X-Wing and TIE Fighter fusion set. While this new creation offers a nostalgic feel reminiscent of the Millennium Falcon set, it certainly doesn’t disappoint with its unique twists!

The Dark Falcon LEGO set stands out from other kits due to its comprehensive instructions. Unlike some other sets which have distinct, modular sections and multiple instruction manuals, The Dark Falcon comes with one extensive guide. This means that LEGO enthusiasts will face a significant challenge in finding a suitable pause point during the building process. On the positive side, once you begin constructing The Dark Falcon, it’s tough to put down. However, it’s advisable to build this set on a light-colored surface since black pieces can be challenging to locate when working on a darker background.

17 bags make up this set, each containing approximately 92 pieces in total (amounting to 1,579 pieces in total). Building it takes about seven hours. The initial six bags construct the recognizable footprint of the ship and its familiar rear engines. However, the ship doesn’t truly resemble the Falcon until these first six bags are finished. Notably, the first five bags do not include any minifigs. If this is a family project, it would be beneficial for an adult to start working on the initial sections as the more playful elements are introduced from bag 6 onwards.

In this LEGO set, Darth Vader is the initial minifigure you encounter, but since it’s a version from “Rebuild the Galaxy,” his appearance differs – instead of his usual ominous black attire, he wears stark white. Seeing such a drastic change in the villain’s color scheme is quite surprising. Not only does the white stand out against the dark backdrop of “The Dark Falcon,” but Darth Vader also boasts almost five decades of history clad in black armor.

Intriguingly distinct features of “The Dark Falcon” are hidden in bags 7 to 9, making fans look forward to Disney+’s “Rebuild the Galaxy” premiering in September. Though it may resemble the “Millennium Falcon,” unique details like a translucent red enclosure for Darth Vader set it apart. This enclosure, which could be a cell for the white figure, creates an intriguing contrast with the black interiors when viewed through its transparent red walls.

10th and 11th bags not only finalize the outer outline of “The Dark Falcon” and provide additional narrative elements within its interior, but they also introduce characters like Darth Jar Jar and Bounty Hunter C-3PO. Longtime fans will be thrilled to see the realization of the Darth Jar Jar concept, which emerged during the prequel trilogy as a speculation about the Gungan’s darker side. The intricate design of these bags, seamlessly blending curves and static pieces with the LEGO team’s signature precision, demonstrates their exceptional skill in creating even the most complex shapes that appear effortless and natural.

The rest of the bags complete the last steps in covering the exterior of the ship, and build the roof for the “Falcon.” This roof part conveniently opens and closes, providing simple access to the more enjoyable parts of the interior. Similar to the Falcon’s unique blend of curves and sharp edges, constructing the roof may seem monotonous at times, but witnessing all these pieces connect is incredibly rewarding, particularly with the vibrant red accents adding depth. Unlike other Star Wars models, “The Dark Falcon” remains captivating not just as a completed vehicle but also as an intricate environment filled with numerous interactive elements for minifigures.

1. If you’ve previously constructed the Millennium Falcon and are a long-time fan, you might find it challenging to justify adding The Dark Falcon to your collection. Despite some similarities, it may not be an exact replica, making the build less alluring and the new color scheme potentially unappealing. However, with the release of LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, everything about this The Dark Falcon set will be clarified and given a fresh context, enhancing the building experience. Inside, it features video gaming systems, minifigures representing characters like Jedi Vader, Beach Luke, and Darth Rey, all of which are intriguing additions to the upcoming animated series. Even if this build resembles previous versions, no fan can ever tire of the iconic Falcon.
