As a long-time Marvel enthusiast with memories of Robert Downey Jr.’s near-Doom debut etched deeply into my comic book-loving psyche, this news has me grinning from ear to ear! The prospect of Downey’s return as the mastermind villain, Doctor Doom, is nothing short of thrilling.
Before Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Iron Man, there were rumors that he was considered for the role of Doctor Doom. Now, years later, it seems those rumors will become reality, as Downey is set to play Doctor Doom as the main antagonist in both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. If we’re fortunate, his character may appear earlier; after all, Victor Von Doom not only ranks among Marvel’s most significant villains, but he is also a longstanding adversary of Marvel’s First Family.
According to Jeff Sneider, a well-known source within the Hollywood industry who previously revealed Downey’s unexpected role change before San Diego Comic-Con, there are indications that Downey will make an appearance in a scene following the credits of The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Why is RDJ returning to the MCU?
Based on Variety’s report, Robert Downey Jr. is poised to receive one of Hollywood’s most substantial paychecks upon his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Russo Brothers are expected to earn around $80 million from these projects, with Downey Jr.’s earnings exceeding this figure considerably.
“This role seems incredibly fitting for me, as if it was designed with me in mind, despite the fact that he is more charismatic than I am. I find myself surprisingly embracing the notion… It’s amazing how well we match, and I can’t help but wonder: ‘Are we still looking alright?’ But when I look at our photos, I think: ‘We actually look quite good.'” (Downey said this in a Variety video last month)
In a different conversation, Downey shared that he would never wager against Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and his commitment to the franchise he manages. He often advises, “Never bet against Kevin Feige. It’s a bad wager. He’s the casino. He will always come out on top.”
The upcoming Marvel Studios film titled “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” featuring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Mass-Bachrach, John Malkovich, Paul Walter Hauser, Natasha Lyonne, Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal Silver Surfer and Ralph Ineson as Galactus, will premiere exclusively in theaters on July 25th, 2025, marking its debut as part of Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 6.
Marvel Studios’ upcoming movie lineup features “Captain America: A New World” on February 14th, 2025, followed by “Thunderbolts” on May 5th, 2025, then “The Fantastic Four: Initial Footprints” on July 25th, 2025. Afterward, you’ll see “Blade” on November 7th, 2025, and finally, “Avengers: Day of Doom” on May 1st, 2026, and “Avengers: Secret Wars” on May 7th, 2027.
