As a film enthusiast with a deep appreciation for stories that delve into the complexities of human relationships, I am truly thrilled to witness the coming together of such a talented and versatile cast for the adaptation of “The Flower That Blooms in the Dark.”
The It Ends With Us movie excitement has only just begun.
Author Colleen Hoover is aware that both fans and critics hold passionate views about her 2016 best-seller, and they are curious about which parts of the emotionally charged narrative were included or excluded from the film adaptation starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, who also directed it.
In the interview with TopMob News, Hoover explained that as part of adapting something, adjustments are necessary. He likened it to compressing a lengthy narrative into a movie format, implying that alterations were made to enhance the overall coherence and smoothness.
In the novel, it’s clear that the strained connection central to the story remains unchanged: Lively portrays Lily Bloom, a character who justifies her partner’s violence, echoing the silent endurance of her mother who was subjected to abuse by her father.
But as Hoover said, not everything on the page made it onscreen.
To begin with, the eatery that the one and only Atlas, the man who captivates my heart, now owns, has shed its old moniker of Bib’s. Instead, it’s been rechristened, adding another layer to the intrigue Brandon Sklenar weaves as Lily’s beloved on screen.
In the novel, there was a symbolic representation that held great importance for Lily in demonstrating her significance to him. To streamline the narrative for the film adaptation, this symbol became the “Root” instead, as we couldn’t delve into all the book’s details to create that pivotal moment on screen within our limited timeframe.
In the movie we revisited, there was a discussion about adopting “Root” that mirrored our childhood banter from the original story. This new adaptation stirred up the same emotions I felt while reading the book, yet it presented an entirely fresh perspective. Of course, the characters’ ages have also been adjusted to fit the movie timeline.
The story starts with Lily, having just graduated from college, embarking on her dream of opening a florist business in Boston. Though it wouldn’t have caused an argument if the movie had cast 36-year-old Lively as a new graduate, the producers intentionally chose a more experienced actress for the role.
“Initially, when I wrote the book eight years ago, the trend was for new adult characters in their early twenties. However, given the mature subject matter, we decided not to portray young characters on screen. Instead, we chose to make the characters older, which I believe was a wise decision and worked exceptionally well in the film adaptation,” Hoover explained.
Not least because of their leading lady.
Upon learning that Lively had been cast, Hoover expressed a cautious excitement, saying, “I’d love to claim some involvement in her selection.”
As a devoted admirer, I had managed to keep my enthusiasm in check, fearing the prospect of disappointment. After all, the idea of her gracing this role was too enticing. Yet, when she materialized on set and began filming, the experience was nothing short of surreal. However, she is simply remarkable.
…and the unique blend of playful teasing and genuine affection Lively displays on social media alongside her real-life partner, Ryan Reynolds.
In my perspective, the playful banter she exhibits with Ryan on social media significantly contributes to her character’s portrayal. Given the heavy themes and intense emotions in this novel, her ability to inject humor is truly invaluable and incredibly well-executed.
As a die-hard fan, I couldn’t help but eagerly anticipate one crucial element that Hoover deeply yearned to witness in the film: Lily’s heart tattoo. However, she graciously mentioned, “I gave them the freedom to create their vision for the movie.”
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but share this heartwarming detail: Not only have countless fans immortalized the emblem of Lily’s boundless love on their very skin, but my mother, sisters, and I are among them. Yes, you read that right! We bear these tattoos as a testament to our shared affection for this story element. Needless to say, this made it all the more special when it found its way into the narrative.
To a Texan, nothing was more significant than the fact that the movie’s conclusion closely mirrored the original.
As a dedicated filmmaker with years of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the adaptation we are working on is exceptionally faithful to the original source material. There was one particular scene from the book that I fiercely advocated for its inclusion in the movie, as it holds immense emotional weight and plays a crucial role in the narrative. Moreover, there’s a specific line from the book that I am particularly invested in seeing make it into the final cut, as it encapsulates the essence of the story and resonates deeply with my personal experiences as an artist.

Of course, none of it would work without the right actors opposite Lively. Hoover thought Sklenar was the perfect choice for Atlas (“He brings that kindness and protectiveness”), and she sang the praises of Baldoni, who bought the rights to the book years ago but didn’t automatically see himself playing Ryle Kincaid.
He was merely considering the possibility of both directing and acting, according to Hoover, but it wasn’t until the casting stage that it was clear the 40-year-old needed to take on dual roles.
According to Hoover, everything fell into place so that he desired the challenge and the role, and he excelled at it spectacularly. The two of them had fantastic chemistry on-screen, making it a wonderful performance.
In summary, the author found it remarkably captivating as their 2018 novel, “Verity,” is about to be adapted into a movie.
Following the film’s screening and my script analysis, Hoover expressed that the casting was exceptionally accurate and the production turned out exactly as he had hoped.

Regarding the remaining members of the production team, Justin and Blake along with Colleen will have creative control as executive producers. Additionally, Alex Saks (of The Florida Project fame) and Christy Hall (from I Am Not Okay With This series) are also part of the team. According to a statement from Wayfarer Studios and Sony Pictures, it’s Christy who is responsible for writing the script.
Not only Blake, but also Justin has decided to alter his hairstyle for his character. In preparation for filming, Justin opted to cut off his long locks to achieve Ryle’s neat appearance. He shared a video on Instagram on April 15, showing the process and announcing that he was donating his hair to Locks of Love.
