As a longtime fan of the ’90s slasher genre, I must say I’m genuinely intrigued by the upcoming reboot of “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” While I’ve seen my fair share of sequels that missed the mark, it’s refreshing to see director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson honoring at least one of the original movie’s sequels. I can’t help but wonder if this means we might finally get some closure on the mysterious fisherman’s son who seemed to vanish into thin air after the second film.
In contrast to many horror franchises returning after a long hiatus, which often focus only on the initial film, director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson has clarified that the upcoming “I Know What You Did Last Summer” will not follow this pattern. On Twitter, Kaytin Robinson addressed a rumor about the narrative direction, revealing that the new movie will acknowledge at least one of the original film’s sequels, possibly even both. The new “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is scheduled for release in theaters on July 18, 2025.
In response to a post suggesting that the upcoming movie might disregard its predecessors, Kaytin Robinson clarified, “Definitely not I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. It’s indeed canon, I hope this clears things up for you.”
The 1997 film version follows the plot of Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel with the same title, where a gang of pals unwittingly strike someone while driving back from a party and, thinking they’ve killed them, secretly dump the body in the sea. A year down the line, these friends start to receive chilling warnings about their supposed murder and the hidden crime scene, as an unknown assassin targets them one by one.
Just like many slasher films, a sequel was swiftly made following its predecessor’s success, with “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” hitting theaters in 1998. This sequel saw the return of Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.), who had apparently dispatched the fisherman for good in the first movie, but were soon hunted once more by a murderer wielding a hook. Interestingly, it was revealed that the killer from the original film had managed to survive and even recruited his son to finish off Julie and Ray. However, the tormentors’ plans ultimately failed.
As a dedicated fan of the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” franchise, I find myself intrigued by the recent developments in its continuity. Having grown up watching the original trilogy, I must admit that I was initially skeptical when I heard about the straight-to-video sequel in 2006, which seemed to only loosely reference the events of the first two films. However, my curiosity got the better of me, and I ended up giving it a watch.
The new I Know What You Did Last Summer is set to hit theaters on July 18, 2025.
