As a lifelong fan of the Dark Knight and his gritty universe, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming HBO Original series, “The Penguin“. Having grown up with the comics and their various interpretations, I must admit that this latest take on Oswald Cobblepot has me hooked.
In a comparison made by the showrunner, the “Penguin” series is likened to a tale similar to “Scarface.” Empire Magazine delves deep into the character of “The Batman” villain, with creator Lauren LeFranc eager to reveal details. LeFranc shares that this character is intricate and fans will be taken aback by the complexity hidden beneath his villainous facade. LeFranc describes him as a man who carries an air of grandeur due to his criminal status, yet he’s merely a complex individual. This theme of complex characters within crime stories is commonplace, and “The Penguin” follows suit. Matt Reeves aimed for gritty realism in the making of “The Batman,” which aligns with this narrative style. The saga of Oswald Cobblepot’s rise to rule Gotham’s underworld has begun in this HBO Max original production.
LeFranc pointed out that Matt’s portrayal of The Penguin sets him apart from past comic book versions, where the character hailed from a wealthy, prominent family. However, in this film, Matt had already established the Penguin as an underdog, being second to Carmine Falcone. What was significant to LeFranc was that he wanted the Penguin to be someone who came from nothing and yearned for more social status and recognition.
Epic Universe Has Been Brewing For A While
After the trailer debuted for The Penguin, fans were confident that the intense, action-packed style seen in The Batman would carry over into its spinoff. Upon reviewing footage from the series, executives at Warner Bros. Discovery opted to classify The Penguin as an HBO Original instead of Max branding. Furthermore, it was announced that the show will not only be available on HBO but also stream there. Rest assured, streaming enthusiasts, The Penguin will still be accessible for streaming on the platform. In other words, prepare yourself for a lot of action-packed scenes! MovieZine recently interviewed Colin Farrell about his reprisal of his Gotham role and what it implies for the future of this franchise.
“It was a long and really wonderful experience,” Farrell shared. “It’s dark; that’s what I can tell you about it. It’s really dark. It’s really heavy, I think– it certainly was doing it. Which is not to say I didn’t have fun, I had an amazing time doing it. It’s incredibly violent. It’s one man’s rise to what he’s always dreamed of inhabiting, which is a certain power or social status.”
“Carmine Falcone’s death at the end of [The Batman] creates a power vacuum in Gotham, and many individuals are vying to fill it,” Farrell explained. “This is Oswald’s struggle to rise above the challenges and reach the top.”
