As a longtime fan of Battlestar Galactica, I can’t help but feel a mix of disappointment and resignation upon hearing the news that the reboot is officially dead. I vividly remember the exhilarating journey Ronald D. Moore took us on with the 2004 series, and while I was intrigued by the prospect of a new interpretation, I couldn’t shake off the feeling that something was amiss from the get-go.
The reimagining of Battlestar Galactica, which has been in the works at NBC/Peacock since 2019, has sadly come to an end. At first, Peacock hinted that this fresh take on Battlestar Galactica by Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot) would be among their unique programming offerings, making it all the more ironic that Peacock viewers won’t get to see it anymore.
The re-imagined Battlestar Galactica series initially shared a similar universe with the 2000s version, but the specific connection remained unclear. Recently, it was announced that Derek Simonds (known for his work on “The Sinner”) has taken over as showrunner for the BSG reboot, replacing Michael Lesslie who left the project earlier this year.
It may not have helped that Esmail pitched a somewhat confusing series concept for the new Battlestar Galactica – one that would have allegedly played with the format of Television itself:
As a devoted fan, I can share that the creator expressed that each episode could vary in length. We might encounter a three-episode arc or even a self-contained half-hour episode. The goal is to ensure each installment is optimized for its story rather than confining ourselves with strict rules.
Additionally, his lack of apparent self-assurance was not conducive to delivering a compelling full-scale sci-fi performance.
In 2020, when I spoke with The Hollywood Reporter, I confessed my ardent admiration for Ronald Moore’s Battlestar, yet I’m unsure if I could match his prowess in complex sci-fi. However, I adore it and am a fan of it. From the outset, I recognized that we needed to recruit someone to oversee the scriptwriting and production meetings to ensure our series was up to par with such an exceptional show.
What is Battlestar Galactica About?
In the year 2004, Ronald D. Moore, who had previously worked on “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” breathed new life into the classic series “Battlestar Galactica.” This revamped version premiered with a miniserver broadcasted on Syfy in 2003, leading to a full series that started in 2004 and ran for four seasons. The modern-day “Battlestar Galactica” remains highly acclaimed as one of the best science fiction television shows ever produced. After its success, it led to two TV movies (“Razor” in 2007 and “Blood & Chrome” in 2009), as well as a prequel series called “Caprica,” also co-created by Moore. “Caprica” debuted in 2010, but unfortunately, it only ran for one season consisting of 19 episodes.
