Creature Commandos Trailer Reveals First Look at Surprising Wonder Woman Villain

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for comic book adaptations, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming DC Universe series, “Creature Commandos“. Having grown up reading Wonder Woman comics and dabbling in the mythology of Greek gods, Circe has always been a fascinating character. Her abilities to transform humans into animals are intriguing, especially considering the animal-human hybrid Weasel in this series.

As a lifelong fan of the DC Universe, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming debut of the new animated series, Creature Commandos! Having grown up reading and watching countless DC stories, it’s always exciting to see fresh takes on these iconic characters. The fact that this project is the first entry in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Studios only adds to my anticipation. I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the series’ first trailer at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint! The show promises to deliver an action-packed adventure with a unique twist on the titular characters, and the inclusion of a familiar Wonder Woman villain is sure to make things even more interesting. I can’t wait to see where this series takes us and what other surprises it has in store for DC fans like myself!

In a swift instant from the Creature Commandos trailer, viewers can catch sight of Circe, played by Anya Chalotra, demonstrating her powers to magically change bullets into butterflies. Earlier this year, James Gunn confirmed Chalotra’s role, and now it’s clear that she is part of the show’s cast.

Who Is DC’s Circe?

Originating in Wonder Woman #37 from 1944 by Robert Kanigher and Harry G. Peter, Circe is a formidable goddess, known for her unique abilities that can transform innocent people into animals without their knowledge. Typically, she poses as an adversary to Wonder Woman due to the heroine’s roots in Greek mythology, playing a crucial role in the epic storyline “War of the Gods,” penned by George Perez and Russell Braun. Over time, Circe has expanded her antagonistic roles to include encounters with Supergirl, Superman, and Rip Hunter as well, beyond her appearances in Wonder Woman comics.

As a fan, I find the idea of Circe’s power to transform animals intriguing when considering the unique makeup of the Creature Commandos team, specifically their member Weasel (Sean Gunn). With recent hints that Weasel’s backstory will be delved into deeper in the series, it raises a question as to whether Circe could have played a part in shaping his origins.

Who Are DC’s Creature Commandos?

Originally introduced by J.M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick in issue #93 of Weird War Tales, the Creature Commandos are a unique team composed of human-monster hybrids who perform government missions on the battlefield. The cast for the television version includes Eric Frankenstein (played by David Harbour), Bride of Frankenstein (Indira Varma), Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), Dr. Nina Mazursky (Zo? Chao), Doctor Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk), G.I. Robot (Sean Gunn, who also portrays Weasel), and the latter is another character Sean Gunn will bring to life. Maria Bakalova takes on the role of Princess Ilana Rostovic, while Viola Davis plays Amanda Waller, and Steve Agee is John Economos in this series.

Creature Commandos is modeled after an outstanding squad from DC Comics,” Gunn stated while unveiling the series. “For our DC Universe, we are linking animation with real-life action. This includes television shows, movies, and video games all sharing the same universe. The actors we’ll cast will be capable of portraying these characters not only here but also in other projects, some of which we’ve already selected. I myself have written all seven episodes of the series, and it is currently being produced. This is the first project, and I’m quite enthusiastic about it.”
