SDCC 2024: Smiling Friends Creators Almost Didn’t Go With Season 2’s Best Joke

As a seasoned gamer who grew up in the PlayStation 2 era, I must say that the writers of Smiling Friends really hit a nostalgic nerve with their choice of Burnout Revenge in Season 2. The fact that it was almost going to be Shadow of the Colossus is intriguing, but I can understand why they chose Burnout Revenge instead. It’s a classic racing game that brings back memories of my own late-night gaming sessions with friends.

In the second season of “Smiling Friends,” almost an entirely different PlayStation 2 game was humorously referenced instead of the one originally planned. This summer, the animated series made its comeback on Adult Swim with Season 2, and the franchise’s popularity skyrocketed to unprecedented levels. The second season appeared to be even more successful than the first, and numerous jokes became viral sensations as soon as they aired. However, one joke in particular resonated strongly with fans due to its unexpected nature.

In “A Allan Adventure,” the third episode of the animated series “Smiling Friends” Season 2, Allan’s landlord proposes they spend time together playing “Burnout Revenge” on the PlayStation 2. The mention of this particular game title caught fans’ attention throughout the show. During the San Diego Comic-Con 2024 weekend, creators Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel shared that the original plan was to have a different game, “Shadow of the Colossus,” instead.

Why Burnout Revenge for the PS2?

“That was actually originally Shadow of the Colossus,” Hadel first responded when asked why Burnout Revenge was chosen as the landlord’s game. “[Michael] made the call for Burnout.” To which Cusack then explained, “I don’t know why because I remember when my friend got a PS2, the first game I played was Burnout one or two, I think. And that blew my mind from going from PSOne to that. So like I felt like I was on weed and Diet Dr. Meep.”

Hadel clarified, “Initially, what he meant was ‘Shadow of the Colossus’ for PlayStation 2. Michael decided it wasn’t a cooperative game, so the idea started as ‘Alan, I want you to come over and watch me play ‘Shadow of the Colossus.’ But we thought it would be more interactive, so that’s why we made the change.”

To catch that specific episode, as well as the entirety of Smiling Friends’ first two seasons, you can now stream them exclusively on Max. While we don’t have any updates yet, it’s been announced that Season 3 of Smiling Friends is in development, but a release date for the new season hasn’t been set.
