As a die-hard fan who grew up watching the Saturday morning cartoon adventures of Dungeons & Dragons, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia and excitement at the news that Venger is making a comeback! It feels like a dream come true to see this iconic villain gracing the cover of the Dungeon Master’s Guide once again.
It has been announced that Dungeons & Dragons is planning a return for the villainous character Venger, who was originally introduced in the 1980s cartoon. In early summer, Wizards of the Coast unveiled a revamped version of Venger on the cover of its upcoming Dungeon Master’s Guide, which is set to be released later this year. Previously, Wizards had hinted that Venger would appear in an upcoming campaign adventure, but ComicBook asked if any changes had been made to Venger beyond his appearance during the nearly 40-year period between his original and current appearances.
During a conversation with Chris Perkins, one of the game designers behind Dungeons & Dragons, ComicBook inquired about the character Venger and what we might anticipate from this darker, more menacing rendition. “As is customary,” Perkins explained, “Venger harbors hostility towards adventurers. He’s always keen on acquiring their magical artifacts, naturally. There’s also a grudge he holds against Tiamat for some unknown reason.” Perkins added that Wizards of the Coast aim to make Venger a legendary villain like Vecna, who can appear “anywhere” rather than being confined to a specific setting.
In the forthcoming offerings from Wizards of the Coast, iconic 1980s cartoon characters will reappear. This includes artwork featuring these characters, which can be found within the Core Rulebooks. Moreover, Wizards of the Coast has developed convention-play adventures that allow players to assume roles as the mature versions of the cartoon heroes. As Perkins explained, one such adventure involves rescuing Uni the unicorn from a predicament.
In addition to the Dungeons & Dragons lore stemming from the ’80s cartoon, another exciting development has emerged. As stated by Perkins, “We’ve been exploring the idea that there were other groups besides ours who ventured into this world.” A new character, Nico, a cleric, is one of these individuals, having interacted with Venger and now encountering our primary group. Perkins hinted at more characters to join the adventure, such as a Warlock character, to expand the team.
