Marvel Kills off Major Spider-Man Villain

As a gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the comic book universe of Spider-Man, I can honestly say that the latest twist with the Green Goblin has been nothing short of exhilarating! The intricate narrative, filled with twists and turns, is reminiscent of a high-stakes RPG where you’re constantly on the edge of your seat, waiting to see what happens next.

Back in 1964, I stumbled upon an issue of Amazing Spider-Man that introduced a villain who would become my hero’s most formidable adversary: the Green Goblin. This encounter marked the start of a captivating saga between the archrivals, Spider-Man and the Green Goblin, and their alter-egos, Peter Parker and Norman Osborn. Over the subsequent 60 years, these two have been locked in an unending struggle, with each issue adding another layer to their complex relationship.

In 2020, the reformed character formerly known as Norman Osborn transformed into the valiant Gold Goblin, eventually becoming both Spider-Man’s guide and partner. This transition occurred when he was purged of his wickedness by Sin-Eater. Previously hinted at in the ongoing Marvel comic series by Zeb Wells, the Green Goblin made a reappearance with an unexpected twist in May’s significant issue Amazing Spider-Man #50.

In recent times, Spider-Man encountered Green Goblin once more after Norman Osborn’s malevolent traits resurfaced. It was later discovered that when Osborn’s “Goblin-Sins” took control of Peter Parker as the dark-costumed villainous Spider-Man, he employed the Winkler Device to surreptitiously embed a Goblin-Sin replica within Parker’s mind. The Green Goblin used a specific phrase to transform Parker into the wicked Spider-Goblin, but Spider-Man managed to regain consciousness briefly, allowing the Goblin to transfer the sins back into Spider-Man’s physical form.

In this week’s issue #54 of “The Amazing Spider-Man”, the villainous Goblin-possessed Spider-Man brags about his triumph over Spidey. Addressing Norman as if he were weak, he says, “I defeated Spider-Man.” Then he adds ominously, “Now… I have become Spider-Man.” Delighted by the corruption of Peter Parker’s pure heart, which had created a device to trap the Goblin’s mind, the possessed Spidey destroys the spear instrument, releasing the malevolent spirit of Goblin-Sin, appearing now as a sinister entity.

In this scenario, the entity known as the Goblin-Sin takes control of Spider-Man, telling his previous host, “This is it, Norman. I’ve had enough of you.” However, it is Norman Osborn who is destined to carry the weight of the Green Goblin, so with a swift strike of his spear, he reclaims the Goblin-Sin from Spider-Man. As the Green Goblin mocks Peter, saying “I’ve stolen your mind,” and boasting, “I will soon possess your soul,” Spider-Man voluntarily accepts the Goblin’s transgressions. From now on, the Green Goblin will no longer torment Spider-Man.

Within the intelligent, brain-controlled gadget, Spider-Man’s final confrontation with the Green Goblin materializes as a spiritual battle for Peter Parker’s essence. “This is the one doubt that has occupied my thoughts since I was created,” states the Living Brain, initially introduced in 1963’s Amazing Spider-Man #8. “It is the question that holds all other questions insignificant. Soon, Norman Osborn’s transgressions will discover its answer. The question posed is: Who truly is Spider-Man?”

The answer unfolds over a double-page spread filled with tragedy and triumph. Heartbreak and heroism. Loss and lessons. “He is broken. He is selfish. He is guilty. But he learns. In every heartbreak… every defeat… he has a choice,” the Brain says. “To give in to rage, make his heart fearful and small. Or to brave. To feel deeply, and expand. Through his life, no matter the enemy… no matter the tragedy… Spider-Man keeps his heart open. He will never give up.”

“Because above all else,” the Brain determines, “Spider-Man is Peter Parker.”

With that, the Green Goblin’s transgressions have been permanently purged. “Finished,” Spider-Man declares. “The Green Goblin has met his end.”

Although Norman Osborn appears to endure, your selfless actions were not aimed at destroying him but rather saving his life. This thought brings joy, Norman says, and perhaps one day we might consider each other friends. Spider-Man contemplates this idea, his heart filled with compassion. With a hint of optimism, he responds: “Stranger things have certainly occurred.”
