As I read about the inspiring story of Madeline Musselman and her husband Pat Woepse, my heart swelled with admiration for their unwavering love and resilience. Despite being faced with the daunting challenge of stage 4 lung cancer, Pat chose to stand by his wife’s side during her Olympic journey, embodying the spirit of a true champion.

The U.S. women’s water polo player is currently competing at the 2024 Olympics—an event that her husband Pat Woepse shared he was determined to be present for months after being diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.

“Madeline, who first encountered Pat in 2022, shared with NBC Los Angeles her feelings about having concerns and uncertainties occasionally. However, she emphasized these doubts don’t control her thoughts constantly. She attributes a significant role to her faith in overcoming such apprehensions.”

Immediately following Pat’s unique diagnosis, given its rarity thanks to a particular mutation, the pair hastily made plans to tie the knot at their earliest convenience.

In the spirit of sharing, I’d like to express my gratitude for everyone who made our October 2023 wedding happen in a mere four days. It was nothing short of remarkable! The weekend was filled with beautiful flowers, and we were warmly welcomed by a church that graced us with their arms open wide to marry us. Truly, it was a flawless weekend that I will cherish forever.

Upon tying the knot with my beloved, I embarked on my Olympic journey, yet found myself pausing at times to be by Pat’s side – a fellow athlete, whose extraordinary feats include swimming the English Channel! During these challenging moments of his chemotherapy, my support became paramount.

“She said, ‘He insists I should attend practice,’ but what she meant was, ‘I want him to understand that I’m supportive, however, it has been challenging for me.'”

“He shared that achieving this goal, given all the uncertainty, was a significant moment for him. He described it as an intensely emotional day for him. Overjoyed beyond words, he felt privileged to be there to cheer on Maddie and her team.”

Despite keeping certain aspects of Pat’s health story confidential, Madeline revealed that they chose to disclose more about their life in order to establish empathy and bond with other people.

She pointed out that they are telling their tale not to provoke pity or sadness about their circumstances. Instead, if possible, it is meant to inspire – to show that even in tough times, you can make it through with those close to you by your side. That’s the message they wish to convey.
