Nintendo Switch Online Is Adding a Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Game

As a long-time Pokemon enthusiast who’s witnessed the evolution of these adorable creatures from Game Boy to Switch, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia upon hearing about the arrival of “Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team” on Nintendo Switch Online. While I might have missed out on this particular adventure during its original release back in 2006, I’m thrilled to finally get my hands on it and delve into a new Pokemon experience.

Yesterday, Nintendo extended its tradition of Thursday announcements for Nintendo Switch Online updates by revealing that a Pokémon game from almost two decades ago is set to join the Nintendo Switch Online service soon. Beginning on August 9th, subscribers of the expanded Nintendo Switch Online service can enjoy playing the classic title, “Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team,” at no additional cost. This addition will increase the total number of Pokémon games available on the service to six. Enthusiasts of the franchise are eagerly awaiting more iconic games from the early years to be added to the Nintendo Switch Online service as well.

On Thursday, news about the revival of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team was spread across social media platforms, including a short teaser trailer for the game. This game, along with its counterpart Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team, were the initial installments in the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series. Therefore, those who joined the series later might have missed out on these early games. Notably, Red Rescue Dungeon was exclusively available for the Game Boy Advance, whereas Blue Rescue Dungeon was exclusive to the Nintendo DS. Since the Expansion Pack subscription for Nintendo Switch Online doesn’t cover Nintendo DS games, it seems neither of these classic versions will be included in the package.

In this version of the Pokemon game, instead of controlling the creatures as you usually do, players transform into Pokemon themselves. The specific Pokemon you turn into is decided based on initial questions asked during the game’s start-up. Afterwards, you navigate through varying dungeons in a manner reminiscent of roguelike games, which was novel for the Pokemon series at that time.

As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent in various virtual worlds, I must say that the Pokemon series has always stood out for its unique blend of adventure, strategy, and friendship. When I stumbled upon the new Pokemon game, I was immediately intrigued by the premise of being transported into this fantastical universe as one of the beloved creatures myself. The idea of speaking with and interacting directly with other Pokemon is a fresh take on the formula that has kept me engaged for years.

For some time now, fans have been inquiring about the classic Pokémon games, specifically Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue. We’re hopeful that we might be bringing these timeless titles back soon.
