Obsidian Entertainment's Xbox RPG Avowed is delayed to 2025 — here's the new release date

What you need to know

  • Avowed is an upcoming role-playing game from Obsidian Entertainment and Xbox Game Studios.
  • After being slated to launch in 2024, a recent report indicated that Avowed was being pushed into early 2025 to give the game some space away from the crowded holiday period.
  • The report was true, and Avowed is now scheduled to launch on Feb. 18, 2025 across Xbox Series X|S consoles and Windows PC.

As a long-time fan of role-playing games, particularly those from Obsidian Entertainment, I find myself both excited and somewhat understanding about the delay of Avowed. While it’s disappointing to wait longer for this highly anticipated title, I appreciate the developers’ commitment to ensuring that the game is polished and ready for release.

Recent reports of an impending delay for an Xbox game have been proven correct.

The fantasy role-playing game Avowed, developed by Obsidian Entertainment in partnership with Xbox Game Studios, has been postponed from its original release this year, according to an announcement on the official Xbox Games Twitter account.

As someone who has been a dedicated gamer for many years, I can understand and appreciate the sentiment behind this announcement. With an ever-growing list of games to play, it’s always a bit disheartening to see new releases being pushed back, especially when you’ve been eagerly anticipating them. However, I also understand the reasoning behind delaying Avowed until Feb 18, 2025. As a gamer myself, I know how easy it is to become overwhelmed with the sheer number of games vying for my attention. A delay like this gives me and many other players some much-needed breathing room in our backlogs.

Following a report from The Verge that Avowed has been postponed, which was confirmed by Windows Central, it appears that the decision to delay the game is aimed at providing Avowed additional time away from an already packed fall and holiday season. This busy period includes numerous Xbox first-party launches such as multiple unnamed titles, as well as highly anticipated third-party games like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Although you can’t play Avowed at Gamescom 2024, Xbox will instead host theater presentations showcasing more details about the game, as well as similar presentations for Indiana Jones and the Starfield: Shattered Space expansion.

Upon its release, Avowed will become available on Xbox Series X|S consoles and Windows PC, and will also be accessible right away through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.

Avowed returns to the world of Eora

Obsidian Entertainment's Xbox RPG Avowed is delayed to 2025 — here's the new release date

Set within the Living Lands, a region of the grand world of Eora introduced in Obsidian Entertainment’s isometric Pillars of Eternity series, Avowed places you in a realm rich with diverse tones and treacherous adversaries. As you navigate your journey, you’ll need to make crucial decisions and recruit allies to aid you on the path you choose through this hitherto undiscovered corner of the Pillars universe.

Earlier this year, my coworker Zachary Boddy sat down with Obsidian for an interview regarding their upcoming game, Avowed. This conversation revealed insights into the development of the game and what enthusiasts should anticipate playing.
