EastEnders spoilers as killer Reiss Colwell conceals shock engagement to Sonia

As a long-time EastEnders viewer, I must say this latest twist in Reiss Colwell’s storyline has me both intrigued and appalled. Having watched his character from the start, I can’t help but feel a sense of déjà vu – it seems like every time we think he’s hit rock bottom, he manages to dig himself into an even deeper hole.

In the upcoming episode of EastEnders, Jonny Freeman, played by Reiss Colwell, will be concealing another mystery. He’ll still be hiding his violent actions from everyone else.

Following the act of suffocating his unconscious wife Debbie (Jenny Meier), with the intention of cashing in on her life insurance, Reiss removed her engagement ring from her body in the morgue.

Shortly thereafter, Debbie’s mother, Brenda Collins (played by Nichola McAuliffe), became wary of Reiss due to her longstanding lack of trust in him during their marriage. This distrust was soon evident as she confronted him.

As I observed, Sonia, the expectant partner of Reiss, found herself seething with frustration. This was due to his persistent dishonesty about his financial matters, a truth he had finally confessed: he had pilfered money from Phil Mitchell and Sharon Watts.

In the midst of Reiss’s efforts to obtain his life insurance money, Sonia ultimately became convinced, and when she broached the topic of marriage, Reiss treated it as a genuine proposition.

Ultimately, instead of selling Debbie’s ring, Reiss decided to utilize it for a proposal towards Sonia. To his joy, she agreed, even though the ring didn’t fit her perfectly well and given that it had been his late wife’s.

In the following sequences, Sonia and Reiss find themselves overjoyed at their engagement; however, due to Debbie’s passing and the townsfolk’s rumors, they decide it’s best to hide their happy news temporarily.

While Reiss frets over the autopsy findings, Eve Unwin (Heather Peace), notices him wearing Debbie’s old wedding ring at the café. Later, when he announces his engagement to Sonia, Eve advises Reiss to enjoy the moment, disregarding any gossip that might arise.

However, later on, Reiss becomes anxious when Phil requests a repayment of his ‘investment’ in just 24 hours, causing him to deceive Sonia once more. Will Reiss get found out – not only by Phil, but also potentially by the authorities?

EastEnders airs these scenes on Monday 5th August.

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and from 6am on BBC iPlayer.
