Reflecting upon these heartwarming moments at the Paris Olympics, I can’t help but be moved by the sheer determination and resilience displayed by these athletes. Each one of them carries a unique story, a testament to their unwavering spirit and commitment to their craft.
Huang Yaqiong got something extra special with her gold medal at the 2024 Olympics.
Following their victory in the badminton mixed doubles at Paris on August 2nd, winning the top prize alongside partner Zheng Siwei, Team China’s Olympian found herself saying “Yes” to a crucial question when teammate Liu Yuchen proposed marriage by getting down on one knee.
Huang expressed to Olympics.com that he was too overwhelmed with joy to find the right words, as he had received the gold medal which symbolized the acknowledgment of their arduous journey.
30-year-old woman choked back tears as she graciously received the proposal, with spectators at La Chapelle Arena enthusiastically supporting the moment. It turned out, as Huang clarified, that she was completely taken by surprise by the unexpected gesture.
She went on, expressing her surprise at receiving the engagement ring. With all her focus on training for the Olympics, such a proposal wasn’t something she had anticipated.
It’s unclear what they plan to do next, since she mentioned that she hasn’t considered their celebration plans yet.
Previously, Huang and Zheng earned the silver medal in badminton at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Following this victory, Zheng proposed. Nevertheless, Zheng believes that Huang experienced a more favorable result in the competition.
As I observed, it seems to me that she’s experiencing twice the joy this time around. Last occasion was solely about my proposal, but now there are two fortunate events unfolding simultaneously. (According to the Associated Press, these were his words.)
Besides Huang and Liu, another couple, Pablo Simonet and Maria Campoy from Argentina, also got engaged during this year’s Olympics. As reported by Olympics.com, Simonet, a men’s handball player, proposed to his girlfriend, Campoy, who is part of the women’s hockey team, in the Olympic Village before the Games commenced.
“My beloved lady said ‘yes’ to me,” Pablo posted on Instagram, July 24th. “In the wondrous realm, where all originated and where our journey through love and strife began.”
They’ve been a pair since 2015, and they also teamed up during the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
