Game of Thrones: George R.R. Martin Reveals How Many Spinoffs Are In the Works After House of the Dragon

As a hardcore Game of Thrones fan who has spent countless hours debating and analyzing every twist and turn in Westeros, I can hardly contain my excitement at the prospect of more spinoffs! With George R.R. Martin confirming seven new series in development, it feels like winter is coming all over again… but this time, not just in terms of the storyline.

The final episode of the second series of House of the Dragon airs tomorrow, leaving fans craving more from this Game of Thrones spin-off. Although a third season for HBO is on the horizon, there’s plenty more to get excited about. George R.R. Martin has announced that as many as seven additional spinoffs are in development! It remains uncertain which of these ideas will take flight, given that projects within this universe have been abandoned before. However, with such a rich tapestry of stories yet to be told, it seems certain that the realm of Westeros will continue to captivate our screens for quite some time.

Martin recently discussed the upcoming “Game of Thrones” spinoff titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight” at the Oxford Writers’ House. Interestingly, he mentioned that there are seven more series in the works, with three being animated and four live-action. Although the specific themes of these new shows haven’t been confirmed yet, there is much buzz, particularly about a potential live-action series centered around Aegon the Conqueror.

Is the Jon Snow Sequel Series Still Happening?

2022 saw the announcement of a spin-off series focusing on Kit Harington’s “Game of Thrones” character, Jon Snow. However, the actor recently clarified that the project appears to have stalled, suggesting it may no longer be in production.

“Previously, I hadn’t discussed it much as it was still under construction. I wanted to keep its progress secret, avoiding the situation where people might speculate about it, becoming either enthusiastic or critical, before anything concrete materialized. Since it was in development, I considered every aspect to determine if it would prove beneficial,” Harington shared with Screen Rant.

At present, the project isn’t being worked on. We haven’t found a compelling story that excites us all, so for now, we’ve put the project aside. There might be a time when we pick it up again, but as of now, it’s not happening. He concluded by saying that it’s currently sitting unused on the shelf.

Is the Ten Thousand Ships Prequel Happening?

Although it appears that the Jon Snow series won’t continue, George R.R. Martin has announced that the abandoned prequel series Ten Thousand Ships is once again in production at HBO. On his blog, Martin praised playwright Eboni Booth for winning the Pulitzer Prize for her play Primary Truth. In acknowledging Booth’s achievement, Martin also disclosed that she’s been collaborating with HBO to expand the Game of Thrones universe.

In a scenario where I have yet to win a Pulitzer Prize, I find myself puzzled as to why the Pulitzer medal features Ben Franklin instead of Joseph Pulitzer. Eboni, an exceptionally gifted playwright, has promised to enlighten me following the ceremony. She’s not only a talented artist but also a pleasure to collaborate with; when she isn’t penning and staging her award-winning plays on and off Broadway, she’s been occupied by my projects and HBO, working on a fresh pilot for TEN THOUSAND SHIPS, a GAME OF THRONES spinoff focusing on Nymeria and the Rhoynar. We’re all eagerly anticipating this production… although we’re still grappling with finding the funds to cover ten thousand ships, three hundred dragons, and those colossal turtles, as written by Martin.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon spinoffs coming to HBO.
