As a die-hard fan who’s been following the X-Men saga since the early days of comic books, I can confidently say that Deadpool & Wolverine has been an absolute rollercoaster ride! The second weekend box office surge and breaking Logan’s lifetime earnings is just the cherry on top.
In its second weekend, the movie featuring Deadpool and Wolverine is doing exceptionally well, raking in over $630.4 million worldwide. Remarkably, it has surpassed the lifetime earnings of “Logan” at the box office. Notably, the main attraction of this film is the comeback of Hugh Jackman as Logan/Wolverine. Many thought his Wolverine days were over after he died in “Logan,” but Deadpool and Wolverine reprised him as an alternate version. With 24 years of playing the character under his belt, Jackman recently shared on Instagram his thoughts about revisiting the role.
“On September 4, 2022, I snapped this photo – a secret moment shared between me and @vancityreynolds as we prepared to unveil that Deadpool and Wolverine were joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We christened it ‘Becoming Wolverine Again.’ It’s an experience I’ll always cherish, especially when Ryan double-checked if I was absolutely certain. Yes, I was! And still am! Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine Return, Explained:
When Reynolds and Jackman revealed they would join forces for the third Deadpool movie, fans pondered how it could pick up from the storyline of Logan. In James Mangold’s 2017 film, Jackman’s Wolverine met his end, a permanent and deeply moving conclusion for viewers. Given this emotional and satisfying finale, fans have harbored concerns that the Deadpool-Wolverine collaboration might diminish Logan’s legacy. However, the new movie handles Jackman’s comeback thoughtfully, ensuring it aligns with the story while also allowing the iconic Wolverine to find his eternal peace.
In this opening, Deadpool unearths Logan’s corpse, finding to his dismay that the character is indeed deceased. Employing Logan’s adamantium-laced skeleton as weapons, Deadpool wreaks havoc on the members of the TVA. Although some may find this disturbing, many are likely to appreciate the humor. Given that Logan from previous movies is now confirmed dead, Deadpool must embark on a journey through different realities to locate a Wolverine who can aid him in his mission to preserve his universe.
Deadpool encounters several iterations of Wolverine, some of which hold unexpected twists. In the end, he comes across the actual Wolverine, who is grappling with his past errors and isn’t the hero we typically know. This Wolverine has disappointed his X-Men team greatly. Given his self-perceived failure, the titular Wolverine is easily provoked and far from amused by Deadpool’s shenanigans.
Although this new Wolverine character has a distinct backstory compared to the one who perished in Logan, it’s effortless to grow fond of him. Even with his more rugged demeanor, Jackman is well-versed in making Wolverine compelling and fulfilling on screen.
