As a gamer who’s been around the block a few times, I can’t help but reminisce about the golden age of comedy films, and none have left a more lasting impression than the hilarious duo of Harold and Kumar. The recent revelation that Ryan Reynolds played a pivotal role in getting this stoner classic off the ground is a fascinating tidbit that adds another layer to his already impressive resume.
Last weekend saw the theater release of Deadpool & Wolverine, sparking a nostalgic trip for many viewers. They’re not just reminiscing about Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s Marvel roles, but also recalling other films from their past. Before slipping into the role of Deadpool, Reynolds had a string of comedies to his name, one being National Lampoon’s Van Wilder from 2002, which was one of his major projects post-Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place, a sitcom that concluded after four seasons. Interestingly enough, Reynolds’ work on Van Wilder played a part in bringing another classic comedy to life: Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle. As Rolling Stone celebrates the 20th anniversary of this stoner comedy, its star Kal Penn and producer Nathan Kahane have shared that it was Reynolds who helped get the film made.
“During the auditions for Van Wilder, Ryan showed tremendous support towards me,” Penn stated. “In the final round of callbacks, there were two contenders: myself and another actor wearing brownface for the role of an Indian exchange student. When asked about improvisation, he encouraged me by saying, ‘How do you feel about improvising?’ So we improvised the scene, and it was evident that he wanted me to get the part. The entire production was fantastic. At one point, he mentioned casually, ‘When you land your first lead role, let me know so I can take on a supporting character.’ When the opportunity for Harold & Kumar came up and we discussed potential cameos, I contacted Ryan, who agreed enthusiastically.”
Kahane shared that when they received the call from New Line, there was one condition: Since we were using unknown actors, they wanted us to include three cameos in the film to make it feel more immersive cinematically. So, I contacted Ryan’s agent and asked if this was indeed happening. He confirmed that Ryan was fully on board because he adores Kal. We paid Ryan $10,000, and true to his word, he graced the cast with his presence. This addition of Ryan was what ultimately secured the film’s production.
Will Harold and Kumar 4 Happen?
Earlier this year, Penn spoke to ComicBook and offered an update on Harold & Kumar 4.
“Penn clarified when asked about the movie, saying that Jon Hurwitz posted a picture on Instagram which people interpreted as a sign that the project was underway. However, he emphasized that nothing has actually changed. The team would love to make the movie but they’re all busy with different projects currently. Hurwitz and the others are involved with ‘Cobra Kai’, while Penn has been working on ‘Designated Survivor’ and other projects. They’re hoping for their schedules to align and for a suitable concept to emerge.”
According to a current interview in Rolling Stone, Kahane has disclosed that discussions are ongoing regarding a possible fourth movie. Moreover, Penn, John Cho, and co-writer Jon Hurwitz have expressed their readiness to rejoin the project.
