Rob Liefeld Says He's Not Surprised By Deadpool & Wolverine's Box Office Success

As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve witnessed the evolution of superhero narratives from the pages to the big screen. The latest cinematic venture, Deadpool & Wolverine, has taken my breath away, quite literally, as it left me gasping for air during its record-breaking opening weekend.

The action-packed movie starring Deadpool and Wolverine hit theaters last weekend, and it’s been a massive box office smash! With one of the top ten highest opening weekends ever, this third installment has already surpassed the global earnings of Deadpool, Logan, and Deadpool 2. As of now, it has grossed an impressive $824 million worldwide, with predictions suggesting it will reach $1 billion this week. At San Diego Comic-Con, ComicBook got a chance to talk with Rob Liefeld, the creator of Deadpool for Marvel Comics alongside Fabian Nicieza. Liefeld made a cameo in the first Deadpool film, and Deadpool & Wolverine includes a humorous nod to the comic book creator. During our conversation with Liefeld, he expressed no surprise about the threequel’s box office success.

“When informed that Deadpool & Wolverine had earned $200 million on their opening day,” Liefeld remarked, “I had a feeling it would contain a ‘2’ in the figure. I’ve been emphasizing to everyone that it can surpass this milestone. People are overly concerned about the rating. Today’s youth don’t categorize content by PG-13 and R as much as they used to… Modern kids are exposed to more complex material online, so our higher rating, let’s go ahead and break it.”

He mentioned that it’s rewarding to associate with such impressive films, as they’ve all made it into the list of top ten highest opening weekends. They truly earned this recognition.
