Shang-Chi 2: Awkwafina Shares Disappointing Update Following Marvel's Comic-Con Announcements (Exclusive)

As a fan who has been following Marvel’s cinematic universe since its inception, I must say that the wait for Shang-Chi 2 feels like an eternity. Awkwafina’s recent update about the sequel leaves me hanging like Spider-Man on a web line over the abyss. It’s been over a year since we saw Simu Liu and Awkwafina in action, and I can’t help but feel like they’re keeping the sequel under wraps in the mystical Ten Rings organization itself!

Who is the master of Kung-Fu in the upcoming Marvel Studios project? At San Diego Comic-Con last month, Marvel Studios revised their future lineup, renaming “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” to “Avengers: Doomsday,” and paving a clearer route towards “Avengers: Secret Wars.” However, they didn’t reveal many details about ongoing projects. One of these is the sequel to 2021’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” which, despite being Marvel Studios’ first film post-pandemic, had a steady run at the box office and was praised by critics with a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The lead actor in this movie is Simu Liu.

Awkwafina Provides Latest Update on Shang-Chi 2

Shang-Chi 2: Awkwafina Shares Disappointing Update Following Marvel's Comic-Con Announcements (Exclusive)

Progress on a Shang-Chi sequel remains stagnant.

At the Jackpot! junket while talking to ComicBook, Awkwafina, the star of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, shared that she hasn’t received any specific information about potential plans for a Shang-Chi 2 sequel yet.

Awkwafina replied that she hasn’t received any news about a potential Shang-Chi sequel when asked about it. However, the announcements made at Comic-Con were quite thrilling.

Ever since December 2021, I’ve been thrilled to hear that the Shang-Chi saga isn’t ending anytime soon! Marvel Studios has shown great enthusiasm for this martial arts franchise, pushing forward with a theatrical sequel and a Disney+ series centering around the Ten Rings organization. Not only that, but they’ve also increased their commitment to Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton, appointing him to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and serve as an executive producer for Disney+’s Wonder Man series.

The situation has undergone a substantial shift since then. Last autumn, Cretton relinquished his position as director for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. This was approximately nine months prior to the movie’s rebranding as Doomsday. Previously, Simu Liu had indicated that he expected to be part of the cast for Avengers 5 due to Cretton being at the helm, but now he’s uncertain.

Liu admitted honestly back in February to ComicBook, “I don’t really know the details, it’s beyond my level of involvement. I simply enjoy being a fan and appreciating it. Typically, when they call me saying, ‘This is where you’ll be appearing, and this is when you need to be available,’ that’s more or less how things unfold.”

Despite any changes in the cast for “Avengers 5”, Liu confirmed that a sequel for “Shang-Chi” is indeed in the works, and Destin Daniel Cretton’s role as director remains unchanged.

Liu remarked, “Destin is truly exceptional as a filmmaker, and it’s wonderful having him involved in the sequel. He’s currently working on it, and we can’t wait to see his creative output. I have no doubt he’ll deliver an outstanding performance.”

Awkwafina can next be seen in Jackpot! when it premieres on Prime Video on August 15th.
