As a lifelong comic book enthusiast who has patiently waited for the perfect union of Deadpool and Wolverine to grace the silver screen, I can confidently say that this film is nothing short of a triumph. The box office numbers speak for themselves – it’s not just surpassing The Passion of the Christ, but also breaking records set by its predecessors and fellow Marvel films.
In their second weekend, Deadpool and Wolverine’s movie surpassed The Passion of the Christ to become the highest-grossing domestic box office film ever. With earnings of $395.6 million domestically and an additional $428.5 million internationally, its total global box office stands at a staggering $824.1 million. This figure surpasses both Deadpool movies, placing it third in the rankings for R-rated films globally, trailing only Joker and Oppenheimer. The Passion of the Christ had held this position since 2004, when it became a cultural sensation and paved the way for big-budget “faith-based” films.
Previously, the duo of Deadpool and Wolverine set a new record for Hollywood’s largest opening weekend since Spider-Man: No Way Home, making it one of the top ten biggest opening weekends ever. They smashed past the previous record for the highest opening weekend for an R-rated movie, which was held by Deadpool with $132 million. To date, only nine movies have opened to over $200 million, and six of those are Marvel films and eight are Disney productions, with Jurassic World being the exception as it was distributed by Universal.
As a movie enthusiast, I must admit that the movie scene has been somewhat lackluster in recent times. Countless big-budget films have fallen flat at the box office, but there have been some major triumphs. However, the opening weekend of Deadpool is more than just a Marvel success since 2021 – it’s also Hollywood’s largest opening overall since No Way Home.
It was crucial for Deadpool and Wolverine to be successful, not only to combat the suggestion that Marvel is experiencing a downturn, but also due to the substantial production costs associated with this film. With an estimated $200 million spent on production and approximately another $100 million on marketing, it’s much more expensive compared to the initial Deadpool which had production costs of around $58 million.
In the Marvel Studios production titled Deadpool & Wolverine, the character Deadpool, portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, is poised to significantly alter the course of the Marvel Cinematic Universe alongside Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman. The movie also features Matthew Macfadyen as Paradox and Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova. Notably, several familiar faces from previous Deadpool installments make a return: Morena Baccarin as Vanessa Carlysle, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Stefan Kapi?i? as Piotr Rasputin/Colossus, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Rob Delaney as Peter, and Aaron Stanford returns to the screen once more as Pyro, a character originally featured in the X-Men film series.
Kevin Feige, Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy, and Lauren Shuler Donner are the main producers for the project, with Louis D’Esposito, Wendy Jacobson, Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, George Dewey, and Simon Kinberg serving as executive producers. The screenplay for Deadpool & Wolverine is written by Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Zeb Wells, and Shawn Levy.
Deadpool & Wolverine was released exclusively in theaters on July 26th.
