Shogun Star Offers Season 2 Update

As a lifelong fan of historical dramas and a connoisseur of Japanese culture, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the return of “Shogun” for Seasons 2 and 3. With Hiroyuki Sanada reprising his role as Lord Toranaga, I have high hopes that we’ll see even more depth and authenticity in the portrayal of Japan’s tumultuous past.

The popular series “Shogun” is making a comeback on FX and Hulu for seasons 2 and 3, with season 1 generating significant buzz due to its numerous Emmy nominations – more than any other TV drama this year in the category. The lead actor Hiroyuki Sanada (portraying Lord Toranaga) has been confirmed to return for “Shogun” season 2, and he recently shared some tantalizing insights about the show’s upcoming developments.

In the “Awards Circuit” podcast hosted by Variety, Sanada was questioned about the ongoing saga of Shogun Season 2. The first season was a screen adaptation of James Clavell’s novel “Shogun,” published in 1973, which concluded the storyline and developed its characters in a profound and genuine manner. Hence, the question arises as to how the TV series will carry on the narrative while preserving the same level of depth and authenticity as achieved by Clavell’s novel?

Sanada acknowledged that we don’t possess the original book. Yet, this doesn’t dismay him; instead, he views the absence of the source material as a chance: “There’s room for creativity here…I trust our writers to make use of their creative liberty, while still honoring the spirit of the novel.”

James Clavell’s novel, “Shogun,” is essentially an extensive character sketch centered around Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Sanada), a role that bears resemblance to the real-life figure, Lord Ieyasu Tokugawa. The pivotal event in the book and its adaptation unmasks Toranaga’s cunning deception, as he strategically engineers a conflict against rival lords and ultimately claims the title “Shogun,” which was once held by his ancestors in reality. Notably, the central characters in “Shogun,” including Toranaga, are derived from historical Japanese figures; however, Toranaga is a fictionalized portrayal of Lord Ieyasu Tokugawa, the founder of Japan’s Tokugawa shogunate, who reigned for over two centuries during one of Japan’s significant periods of unity.

Sanada stated that Ieyasu Tokugawa earned his admiration by ending the conflict and establishing over 260 years of peace.

Despite the narrative of the “Shogun” novel reaching its conclusion, history presents a wealth of paths for the show to explore further. While Tokugawa successfully claimed the title of Japan’s first Shogun, his role was far from over as he faced numerous challenges both internally (betrayals from family, allies, and rebellious lords) and externally (foreign powers like England and Spain attempting to exert control over Japan’s destiny). The tales of Toranaga and John Blackthorne (loosely based on the historical figure William Adams) continue to unfold as they navigate the transformation of Japan under the Shogunate.

Indeed, Sanada hints that Shogun Season 2 will comprise a blend of familiar faces, as well as fresh characters joining the cast.

Sh?gun is now streaming on FX on Hulu.
