Deadpool & Wolverine: Dafne Keen Reveals How Often Channing Tatum's Gambit Caused Bloopers

As a seasoned gamer and Marvel enthusiast with over two decades of comics and films under my belt, I can confidently say that Deadpool & Wolverine has been an exhilarating rollercoaster ride. The unexpected debut of Channing Tatum as Gambit was the icing on the cake, bringing a fresh dose of humor and charm to the screen.

For two weekends straight, Deadpool and Wolverine have been exceeding box office expectations with their unapologetic portrayal of the Marvel universe. One of the biggest surprises has been Channing Tatum’s debut as Remy Lebeau / Gambit, a role he had long campaigned for in a solo film at 20th Century Fox. With his witty one-liners and thick Cajun accent, Tatum has left audiences in awe – and it seems his co-stars were equally impressed! In an exclusive interview with ComicBook’s Phase Zero podcast, Dafne Keen (who plays Laura Kinney / X-23) revealed that she found herself laughing on set due to Tatum’s performance.

In the interview we conducted, Keen stated that he had to tell his co-star that, while he was filming, the other actor couldn’t deliver his lines. This is because, as he was trying to portray brooding Wolverine, Keen would frequently break character. He explained, “Let’s get moving.” To which the other actor would respond with something like, ‘I was spreading my seeds in my buttery…’ Keen then had to interject, “Please stop. I need to focus on my performance here. You’re making it difficult for me.”

“Man, he’s just too skilled,” I found myself saying. “Even when he boasted about making a name for himself, I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. Here I was, trying to stay focused, and he wouldn’t stop chattering in my ear. To top it off, he was right there, clear as day, filling up my screen in a full-on close-up. If you look closely, you might catch the moment I bit the dust.”

Why Didn’t Channing Tatum’s Gambit Movie Happen?

Since 2014, the film adaptation of Tatum’s Gambit had been in various stages of production at Fox, experiencing numerous script revisions and director swaps. However, despite these efforts, the movie never saw the light of day. After Disney bought Fox and its Marvel character rights, it was widely assumed that the Gambit film was abandoned completely.

In a 2023 interview with Variety Fair, Tatum stated that Marvel, which was acquired by Disney, took over Fox, and as a result, the tone of the movie we intended to produce differed significantly from what Disney/Marvel wanted. It’s possible they were curious about our approach or they may have chosen to proceed without us. He added that they occasionally reach out, but ultimately, we need to emotionally, mentally, and spiritually let go of the project.
