The Stormlight Archives RPG Is Actually the Cosmere RPG, Will Adapt All of Brandon Sanderson's Worlds

As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of tabletop role-playing experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of expansions, reboots, and adaptations. But the announcement of the Cosmere Roleplaying Game by Brotherwise Games has left me absolutely spellbound! Growing up reading Brandon Sanderson’s works, I never imagined that one day I would be able to delve into his intricate worlds and immerse myself in their magic systems as a player.

Brotherwise Games has kept a secret reminiscent of Brandon Sanderson’s style for RPG enthusiasts: The Stormlight Roleplaying Game, unveiled as the Cosmere Roleplaying Game, is now the focus. Today, this tabletop game creator revealed that the Kickstarter campaign, launched today, will finance the initial two stages of the evolving Cosmere Tabletop RPG. This roleplaying game will debut with two scenarios – Stormlight and Mistborn – each encompassing all books published in those series so far. Furthermore, these scenarios will expand with subsequent novels penned within these worlds.

In an interview with egmr.ru, Johnny O’Neal, the creative director for the Cosmere RPG, elaborated that their goal was to construct a cohesive system capable of encompassing all of Sanderson’s worlds. “Attempting to develop a Stormlight RPG and subsequently piece together the remaining elements would be challenging,” O’Neal stated. “The action economy is a significant factor in maintaining game balance, as it determines the availability of resources like Investiture. You can deplete your Investiture, then replenish it by breathing Stormlight, but doing so comes at the cost of actions.”

In the fictional world of Elantris, as explained by O’Neal, the action economy serves to balance out different magic systems. For example, the AonDor system, which allows characters to draw powerful runes in the air, is incredibly potent but requires multiple actions or turns to execute, thus balancing it with other faster-acting magical systems like Mistborn’s. In essence, O’Neal stated that while Elantrians possess godlike abilities, they perform slower actions compared to a Mistborn, making their magic systems more manageable within the game mechanics.

The new role-playing game settings will be unveiled over several years, with Stormlight planned for 2025 and Mistborn for 2026. As stated in our Kickstarter video, author Brandon Sanderson aims to continue supporting this RPG as long as he’s writing books, referring to it as a “living” RPG that grows with each new book. This means that when he writes a new Elantris book, we aim to release the Elantris campaign setting. While we can’t confirm future plans due to their potential changes, our third setting might be the Worldhopper campaign, which focuses on uniting different worlds. Other possible future releases could include Warbreaker and Elantris.

The role-playing game (RPG) is set to launch just before the publication of Brandon Sanderson’s latest Stormlight novel, “Wind and Truth”. However, O’Neal clarified that the game will evolve in tandem with Sanderson’s frequent book releases. He recalled how back in the ’90s, there were some RPGs attempting to create a living experience, gradually advancing as well.

Instead of requiring continuous book purchases to follow the overarching plot in games like White Wolf’s World of Darkness, the introduction of new Sanderson books expands the game with additional “adventure periods”. For example, Stormlight RPG offers three eras, while Mistborn RPG currently has two but can expand further when Sanderson publishes more books for that universe. As O’Neal stated, “We’ll be discussing the two distinct major eras in Mistborn Era 1 and 2.” Additionally, with the release of Mistborn Era 3, players are looking forward to an exciting experience, similar to a Shadowrun-style cyberpunk game but with a strong emphasis on high fantasy and sci-fi role-playing. You’ll be amazed by spaceships fueled by Investiture!

In collaboration with Brandon Sanderson, a renowned author, and Dan Wells, our new RPG campaign kicks off with two interconnected adventures. Each story is tailored to one of the game’s initial settings. The “Stonewalkers” adventure places players at the helm of pivotal events that lead into the forthcoming “Wind and Truth” novel, while “Mistborn Legacy” traverses two epochs of that setting, unraveling a mystery that foreshadows the future of that world.

As a long-time fan of Brandon Sanderson’s epic fantasy series, I am beyond excited about the upcoming release of the Stormlight and Mistborn RPGs! The pledge tiers for this Kickstarter campaign offer some fantastic options for both casual readers and dedicated gamers.
