The Goldman Case – TRAILER

The Goldman Case – TRAILER

As a movie buff with a penchant for courtroom dramas and a deep appreciation for French cinema, I eagerly await the release of “The Goldman Case.” The trailer promises a gripping tale that masterfully recreates the tumultuous 1976 trial of Pierre Goldman, a political activist whose life and ideals seem as relevant today as they were half a century ago.

It’s not surprising, given the French propensity for expressing strong discontent quickly and organizing nationwide strikes easily, that the Goldman Case trailer depicts their extreme sensitivity, even within a courtroom setting.

The trial of Pierre Goldman, a well-known Jewish political activist with leftist views, begins. He was given a life sentence for committing four armed robberies, one of which led to the deaths of two women. However, Goldman maintains his innocence in the murder charges. As this high-profile case unfolds, Goldman becomes a romanticized figure and an icon for the intellectual left. Yet, the bond between Goldman and his young attorney Georges Kiejman grows strained. Despite this, Goldman continues to fight for his ideals, creating turmoil in his own trial, potentially facing the death penalty.

Cédric Kahn’s film, titled “The Goldman Case” (released as both “Roberto Succo” and “Red Lights”), received broad critical acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival and has been lauded at numerous international festivals, such as the BFI London Film Festival. The script is sharp, performances are outstanding, and Kahn skillfully portrays the gripping 1976 trial of Pierre Goldman, a political activist whose case split the nation. This compelling drama serves as an insightful commentary on the political, ideological, and racial conflicts prevalent in 1970s France and Europe, themes that resonate with contemporary society.

Within the courtroom’s walls, Kahn’s gripping drama unfolds. The script, painstakingly constructed from real-life newspaper accounts of the trial, forms the basis of this work. THE GOLDMAN CASE explores the mindset of a revolutionary with radical leanings, while simultaneously illuminating a society grappling with deep-rooted issues of racism and political strife that persist even to this day.

The Goldman Case is released in UK & Irish cinemas 20th September 2024
