As a seasoned gamer with years of immersing myself in various anime universes, I must confess that Yoshiyuki Tomino‘s candid admiration for Hayao Miyazaki is nothing short of relatable. Having grown up with both Gundam and Studio Ghibli, their impact on my formative years is immeasurable.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but acknowledge the towering influence Yoshiyuki Tomino has had on my favorite genre – anime. His groundbreaking creation, the mech suit franchise known as Gundam, continues to reign supreme in the world of robotics. Over time, the Mobile Suit: Gundam series keeps pushing boundaries by weaving new tales and often revisiting its original universe, like this year’s Gundam: Requiem For Vengeance.
In a recent conversation on Full Frontal, the creator of Gundam was asked if Hayao Miyazaki, the director of Studio Ghibli, should be considered more as a craftsman than an artist. To which he responded, “If Miyazaki were merely a craftsman, he wouldn’t have created something like ‘The Boy and the Heron.’ If you label him a craftsman, it shows a lack of understanding. He’s a visionary director. Notice, he made an animated film without a happy ending, which is rare if one does things casually. That’s why I don’t believe I can be compared to such a visionary director as Miyazaki. Perhaps Miyazaki himself might compare with someone like Victor Hugo for ‘The Boy and the Heron.’ But overall, I am not particularly fond of his other works.”
Gundam Vs. Ghibli
After seizing the moment, Yoshiyuki admitted that he regarded Hayao Miyazaki as a formidable rival due to the latter’s exceptional skill in the animation field. He explained, “In essence, I lack the abilities necessary to be a true auteur. This is why Hayao Miyazaki has always been my adversary: striving to outshine someone I could never match in the same era has driven me.”
Although Yoshiyuki Tomino isn’t personally creating it, the upcoming Netflix anime titled “Mobile Suit Gundam: Requiem For Vengeance” is set within the original universe that gave birth to the first Gundam series. The streaming platform describes this new series, premiering on October 17th as “Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance“, which centers around the European front of the One Year War, similar to the setting of the initial Gundam series, “Mobile Suit Gundam“. The production of this series is a collaboration between SAFEHOUSE and Unreal Engine 5. Gavin Hignight, who has previously worked on animated shows like “Tekken: Bloodline“, “Transformers: Cyberverse“, and the video game “Marvel’s Spider-Man“, is writing it. The director, Erasmus Brosdau, who has also contributed to animated series like “Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness” and video games such as “Star Citizen“, “Ryse: Son of Rome“, and the “Crysis” series, is overseeing its direction.
