Deadpool & Wolverine: “No Cocaine” Rule Was Real, And One of the First Jokes They Wrote

As a die-hard Marvel fan with decades of comics and films under my belt, I must say, the behind-the-scenes stories of Deadpool & Wolverine never cease to amaze me! The cocaine joke between Deadpool and Blind Al was one of the first jokes written for this movie, and it all started because Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige had a strict “no cocaine” rule. Now, that’s something you don’t hear every day in Hollywood!

One interesting aspect about some of the funniest jokes is their foundation in reality, and it seems this rule applies to the duo of Deadpool and Wolverine as well. In the film (and several trailers), a scene involves Blind Al proposing a cocaine spree to Deadpool, to which he replies that Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige had forbidden any drug use in the movie. Remarkably, this was true – and it was this restriction that sparked the creation of that specific scene. Director Shawn Levy shared that this joke was among the very first written for the team-up film.

During an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Levy explained that the cocaine joke and the Marvel Jesus joke were conceived early on in the project’s development.

“In the beginning, Levy found it amusing how Wade was presented as getting a chance to shine in the big leagues, coupled with his arrogant belief in being a messiah. This was quite characteristic of Wade Wilson, he said. Additionally, an early decision was made not to include drug use, particularly cocaine, as per Feige’s instructions – a rule that was indeed valid. Kevin Bacon (presumably referring to the actor portraying Deadpool) requested a genuine Deadpool movie, and while we might tone down some drug-related content involving Al and Wade, we agreed and quickly wrote a joke about Feige’s no-cocaine rule, which later became one of our first jokes in the script.”

In the Marvel Studios production titled “Deadpool & Wolverine“, Deadpool, portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, and Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman, will rewrite the storyline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe together. The cast includes Matthew Macfadyen as Paradox, Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova, along with the return of some familiar faces from the Deadpool series such as Morena Baccarin as Vanessa Carlysle, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Stefan Kapi?i? as Piotr Rasputin/Colossus, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Rob Delaney as Peter, and Lewis Tan as Shatterstar. Additionally, Aaron Stanford is reprising his role as Pyro from the X-Men film series, while there are rumors that Jennifer Garner may return to portray Elektra Natchios.

As a gamer, I’d put it this way:
