As a fan who has closely followed Jenna Ortega‘s career, it’s fascinating to see her growth both as an actress and a public figure. Her candidness about the struggles she faced during the filming of Wednesday is commendable, especially considering the immense pressure that comes with portraying such beloved characters.
Jenna Ortega was already climbing the ladder to stardom when she landed the role in Netflix’s spinoff series “Wednesday,” and the show’s success catapulted her fame even higher. Following the debut of Season 1, Ortega frequently discussed the challenges she faced during filming, such as her dissatisfaction with a love triangle for her character. However, she has since clarified those statements and acknowledged that she tends to talk a lot and may have unintentionally misconstrued the situation. Besides voicing her reservations about the series’ narrative, Ortega also disclosed that she contracted COVID while filming, as well as other uncomfortable experiences on set. Production for Season 2 of “Wednesday” is now underway.
In a candid conversation with Vanity Fair, Ortega admitted that he might not have articulated his thoughts clearly during the discussion. He confessed to being rather verbose at times, and acknowledged that if he had explained the situation more effectively, it might have been better received. The publication also pointed out the lengthy pauses in his responses.
Given the iconic status of The Addams Family in popular culture, there was undoubtedly a great deal of expectation when it came to creating a successful spinoff, posing numerous challenges for both the cast and crew. Fortunately, these risks were worth taking as Wednesday turned out to be one of Netflix’s most popular shows of 2022. Jennifer Ortega has shared that the experiences from the initial season have influenced the upcoming episodes, with her playing a larger role in determining the series’ direction.
In a chat with Elle Fanning for Variety in 2023, Ortega shared that they aim to intensify the horror element in the show. Given its playful nature, a production like this featuring vampires, werewolves, and supernatural powers should avoid coming across as overly self-important.
She added, “We’re ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday, which is really great.”
Back in 2022, even as a die-hard fan of this game series that had me hooked right from the get-go, I found myself voicing my concerns about specific aspects of it. Ortega’s comments echoed my own feelings.
The actor shared with MTV News in December 2022 that they have never been a fan of love triangles. With Tyler out of the picture, they believe she might abstain from dating for some time. They seem to see potential for a lovely non-romantic friendship between her and Xavier. In fact, they expressed their hope that this could develop into a heartwarming platonic relationship, as such friendships between men and women, devoid of romantic entanglements, are not portrayed often enough on screen. They find it refreshing to imagine such genuine, almost sibling-like relationships.
Stay tuned for updates on Season 2 of Wednesday.
