As a gamer who grew up watching sci-fi and fantasy shows, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of nostalgia and sadness at the news of Patti Yasutake’s passing. Her role as Nurse Ogawa in Star Trek: The Next Generation was a staple for many fans like myself, and her performances in other shows have left an indelible mark on the TV landscape.
Actress Patti Yasutake, famed for her roles in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Netflix’s hit show Beef, has sadly passed away at the age of 70 (according to Deadline). Her manager and friend Kyle Fritz shared the heartbreaking news that she passed peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, following a prolonged battle with Cancer. Yasutake leaves behind her siblings Linda Hayashi and Steven Yasutake. A memorial service for Yasutake will take place at East West Players, and the family has kindly asked for donations to this theater company instead of flowers. Our thoughts are with Yasutake’s family and friends as they navigate through this challenging period.
Yasutake and Fritz have been colleagues for more than three decades, with Patti being the very first client they worked with. As Fritz reminisced, he shared, “When I started working over 30 years ago, Patti was my inaugural client. Every day we spent working together was a joy, and I will dearly miss her spirit, talent, tenacity – but above all, our cherished friendship.”
Born and nurtured in Gardena and Inglewood, Yasutake eventually graduated magna cum laude from UCLA’s theater department. Afterward, she began her acting career at the East West Players. Her first significant role was in Ron Howard’s 1986 film, Gang Go, where she made her major film debut. Subsequently, she reprised her character Umeki in a series derived from the movie. In 1988, Yasutake starred in The Wash, followed by roles in Drop Dead Gorgeous, Blind Spot, and other productions.
In addition to her TV appearances, which include shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Bones, The Unit, Cold Case, NCIS: Los Angeles, Pretty Little Liars, The Closer, and many more, she significantly starred in Star Trek: The Next Generation as Nurse Alyssa Ogawa. She also reprised this role in Star Trek: Generations and Star Trek: First Contact. Notably, her latest role was that of Fumi Sakai, George’s mother, in the critically-acclaimed Netflix series Beef. This series earned six Emmys earlier this year.
Our thoughts are with Yasutake’s friends and family at this time.
