As a devoted fan of the Fletch series, I must say that Jon Hamm’s portrayal of the titular character in ‘Fletch, Confess’ was nothing short of brilliant. Despite the film’s rocky start, with limited distribution and a direct-to-PVOD release, it managed to win over many hearts with its humorous take on the classic character.
Despite having a devoted fanbase, the “Fletch” movies that initially featured Chevy Chase in the 1980s have had an up-and-down history, and the recent reboot with Jon Hamm didn’t deliver the anticipated revival for the franchise. Now, we ponder the prospects of future “Fletch” films starring Jon Hamm.
The Miramax-produced movie titled ‘Fletch Confess’ didn’t secure a broad theatrical release or a streaming video on demand (SVOD) debut. Instead, it had only a minimal theatrical screening and a direct-to-video on demand (PVOD) launch simultaneously. Critics generally liked the film, and many were pleased with the new Fletch movie. For Jon Hamm and director Greg Mottola, it was a passion project; they sacrificed a significant portion of their salaries to extend filming days.
Previously, Bill Block, a former executive at Miramax, funded most of the production and enlisted Mottola to write a sequel titled “Fletch’s Fortune”. The intention was that the movie would appeal to viewers on home streaming platforms. However, a new leader at Miramax has halted any further Fletch films featuring Jon Hamm. Subsequently, director Mottola expressed his thoughts on social media about this development.
As a seasoned writer with years of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel disheartened by the recent turn of events concerning my sequel project. The new head of Miramax, who holds the rights to all the books, has shot down my vision for the continuation of the story that I had painstakingly crafted. It feels like the Fletch curse is striking again, as gatekeepers seem to be oblivious to the potential of my work.
