As a die-hard Lord of the Rings fan, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power! The latest teaser has me all but giddy with anticipation, especially the introduction of the stoors – the Hobbit-like cousins of my beloved Harfoots.
The second season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is attracting even more fans of “Lord of the Rings” with a sneak peek at the Stoors, a Hobbit-like race that includes Smeagol, who later becomes the treacherous Gollum due to the corrupting influence of the One Ring.
In Season 2 of “The Rings of Power“, the Harfoot race, similar to Hobbits, will journey into the arid lands of Rhun. There they will encounter their distant kin, the Stoors. The Stoor community is governed by Gundabel (Tanya Moodie), and unlike the nomadic Harfoots, the Stoors have adopted a more settled lifestyle in their village.
“Moodie informed EW that the storrs’ ancestors were once nomads, but as time passed, they transitioned into a settled community, making it their tradition to care for one another.”
The television series, “The Rings of Power,” will delve into the established tales about the Stoors, a river-dwelling race from “The Lord of the Rings.” Specifically, it will explore that Gollum, known as Smeagol in his past life, was once among them. However, note that while connections to “The Lord of the Rings” may be present, they are not intended to be overly strong or direct.
As I was engrossed in it, a thought crossed my mind – could I possibly be connected to Gollum? However, I didn’t feel comfortable claiming any direct lineage like, ‘Oh, I’m his great-great-grandmother.’ That seemed rather far-fetched to me.
Being stationary, or settled, allows the Stoors to cultivate a richer and more sophisticated culture compared to the Harfoots. They’ve made advancements such as recording history, preserving cultural practices, and intricately designing both their production and costumes. The desert backdrop will offer Rings of Power an opportunity to delve deeper into J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythology, exploring new dimensions to the lore. Interestingly, in this series, we find the Stoors residing in a desert environment (unlike their appearance in Lord of the Rings), which expands the world-building possibilities.
As one stoor actress (Gavi Sing Chera, who plays “Merimac”) describes:
“In these books, characters are famously fond of water. It’s intriguing to consider that they hail from an incredibly dry and barren land, where water holds immense value – a place some might call a sacred desert. Therefore, when you journey and encounter a river, given your history, it must feel like the most welcoming and life-giving oasis.”
As a passionate gamer, I’m thrilled to share that come August 29th, I’ll be diving back into the captivating world of Middle-earth with the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. Can’t wait!
