The Penguin star provided insight into life with his and ex Kim Bordenave‘s 20-year-old son James, who was diagnosed with Angelman syndrome, a rare neurogenetic disorder that “causes delayed development, problems with speech and balance, mental disability, and, sometimes, seizures,” according to the Mayo Clinic.
In a conversation with People (published on August 7), Colin mentioned that it was his first time discussing the topic. He clarified that the reason for his disclosure was simply because he couldn’t consult James about whether he wanted to share this information instead.
The actor who portrays Batman, also father of a 14-year-old named Henry with his ex, Alicja Bachleda-Curús, acknowledged that he converses with James as if he were a mature adult fluent in English and possessing age-appropriate intellectual capacity. However, he understands the need to exercise discretion when deciding what aspects of their life to disclose publicly.
He didn’t seem able to clearly tell me if James was okay with everything, so I’ll have to decide based on my understanding of his character and the kindness within him.
Colin added, “I’m proud of him every day, because I just think he’s magic.”
As a die-hard admirer, I can’t help but share this heartfelt revelation: When my cherished son reaches the milestone of 21, he’ll outgrow the nurturing network specifically tailored to support families navigating life with children who have unique needs.
When your child reaches the age of 21, they essentially need to fend for themselves, Colin explained. The protective measures and specialized education programs will no longer apply. This means you’re usually left with an adult who should be a contributing member of today’s society, but unfortunately, more times than not, these individuals are overlooked instead.
For this purpose, a 48-year-old established the Colin Farrell Foundation, an entity dedicated to improving the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing education, raising awareness, advocating, and implementing innovative programs.
Colin expressed his long-held desire to contribute towards expanding opportunities for families who have a child with special needs, ensuring they receive the necessary support across various aspects of their lives. Essentially, he wants to offer aid in multiple life domains.
With James almost turning 21, it seems like an ideal moment. Colin firmly believes that if James could converse with him, he would wholeheartedly support his father’s choice.
Colin stated that if this action could aid families and young adults with special needs, he would immediately respond, “Dad, I don’t understand your question. It’s obvious, isn’t it?” This is the reason we’re taking action. We’re doing it all in memory of James.
