As a fan who’s been following The Umbrella Academy since its debut, I can confidently say that the introduction of Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally as Gene and Jean Thibedeau has been a delightful twist! Their on-screen chemistry and comic timing, reminiscent of their real-life marriage, adds a unique flavor to the series.
Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Umbrella Academy season 4.
In the debut of The Umbrella Academy’s fourth season, two captivating fresh faces have emerged on the scene – Jean and Gene Thibedeau, portrayed by real-life couple Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally.
At the start of the series, this duo is presented, delivering a speech as the heads of a team named The Keepers.
But who exactly are Gene and Jean and what do they want? Here’s everything you need to know.
Who are Gene and Jean Thibedeau in The Umbrella Academy season 4?
Gene and Jean serve as both the creators and heads of a group known as The Keepers. Their goal is to orchestrate an occurrence named The Cleanse, with the aim of reinstating a single authentic timeline.
In the start of season 4, I find myself delivering a presentation, where both Five (Aidan Gallagher) and Lila (Ritu Arya) were present. Lila shared that we initiated the first chapter of the Keepers in Clovis, New Mexico, and since then, the movement has been growing at an incredible pace.
In their talk titled “The Umbrella Effect,” Jean and Gene discuss this concept using artifacts from The Umbrella Academy’s history. They present evidence of Klaus’s cult, as well as a photograph of the children, to suggest that multiple timelines have been hidden. They propose that it might be possible to revert to an accurate timeline if a phenomenon known as “The Cleanse” is initiated.
In episode 2, after regaining their abilities, the siblings embark on a mission to save Jennifer, who it turns out shares a mysterious link with a colossal squid of dreadful proportions. However, their journey takes an unexpected turn as they are attacked and Jennifer is abducted by Gene and Jean. These two characters believe that Jennifer holds the crucial key to The Cleanse process, which they think will reset the correct sequence of events in time.
They inquire from her on how to perform The Cleanse, yet she tries to escape. However, Gene and Jean manage to capture her inside a barn, along with a huge squid, leaving Jennifer deeply distressed.
In the process of uncovering Jennifer’s relationship with The Umbrellacy, Jean, Gene, and The Keepers embark on a quest to locate Ben and Jennifer.
In Episode 5, they encounter a man named Sy Grossman, who later turns out to be somewhat enigmatic. They talk about Jennifer’s escape with him. Grossman hints that Ben is crucial for The Cleanse, and he persuades Gene and Jean to find Ben before his family does so they can proceed with their plans.
In a surprise attack, The Keepers catch several members of the Hargreeves clan off guard, but Viktor and Reginald manage to slip away just in time. News arrives that one squad has located Ben and Jennifer, prompting Gene and Jean to broadcast a summons to all Keepers, hinting at an impending event known as The Cleanse.
As a dedicated cinephile, I found myself captivated by the final episode (Episode 6) where Gene and Jean’s story reached its poignant conclusion. However, much like the enigmatic character Sy Grossman, their end left me questioning – not everything is as it appears to be with this intriguing duo. Delve deeper into our ending explained to unravel the mysteries.
