Tom Dean is a freestyle competitive swimmer who has competed in championships and the Olympics.
In 2017 and 2018, he kicked off his professional journey by setting new records and clinching the gold medal in the 200m individual medley event at the European Junior Swimming Championships.
In 2021, he achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first British male swimmer in over a century (113 years) to secure two gold medals at the same Olympics. This was made possible not only through his individual performance but also by his contributions within his swimming team.
During the 2024 Olympics, he was part of a victorious relay team with his teammates James Guy, Matt Richards, and Duncan Scott.
He was made an MBE in the New Year’s Honours list in 2022 for his contributions to swimming.
What has Tom Dean said about joining Strictly 2024?
Even before the formal announcement that he’d join Strictly Come Dancing 2024, Tom hinted at getting ready to dance by mentioning he’d don dance shoes.
Following his victory at the 2024 Olympics, he unintentionally revealed his plans to trade the swimming pool for the dance floor, mentioning fellow Olympian swimmer Adam Peaty, who danced with Katya Jones during Strictly Come Dancing in 2021.
“Given that you’d naturally need rest following an entire Olympic cycle, and the chance presented itself, he expressed,” he said. “I found the idea intriguing to explore something new. I plan on doing so, followed by resuming training immediately. It’s a prospect that excites me.”
Yet, when asked directly on Capital FM’s show, he seemed taken aback and changed the subject instead.
“He mentioned that at the moment, he’s fully immersed in relishing the Olympic experience and spending plenty of time with his fellow athletes. As for the summer ahead, he plans to find out what it brings.”
