What you need to know

  • Frostpunk 2 developer and publisher 11 bit studios is teaming up with Skybound Games to produce a PC Special Edition of the game. 
  • The Frostpunk 2 PC Special Edition includes the digital Deluxe Edition of the game, some stickers, a metal keychain and one of two randomly selected patches, all in a special LED-enabled box. 
  • The Frostpunk 2 PC Special Edition is individually numbered, and preorders are available exclusively through the Skybound Online Store.
  • Frostpunk 2 is scheduled to launch on Sep. 20, 2024 on Windows PC via Steam, the Microsoft Store, GOG, and the Epic Games Store, as well as being available day one in Xbox Game Pass.

As a seasoned gamer with a particular fondness for survival city-builders and a deep appreciation for the Frostpunk series, I can hardly contain my excitement over the upcoming Frostpunk 2 PC Special Edition. Having had the privilege of getting hands-on with an early version earlier this year, I can attest to the fact that 11 bit studios has truly outdone themselves with this expansive sequel.

There’s a special box set on the way for this year’s frozen survival city-builder. 

11-bit Studios, developers and publishers of Frostpunk 2, are collaborating with Skybound Games to release a special edition of the game for PC. Each copy of this limited edition version of Frostpunk 2 for PC will feature a unique numbering, and includes:

  • Frostpunk 2 Deluxe Edition (72-hour early access three post-launch DLCs, an exclusive in-game item, digital soundtrack, novella, and artbook)
  • One of two faction patches, the Technocrats or Icebloods, randomly placed in each box set
  • A metal and enamel keychain
  • Two art postcards
  • Stickers featuring the game’s key art and logo
  • An LED-enabled Artistic Shadowbox which can use batteries or USB power

Following a delay in addressing player feedback from the April testing phase, Frostpunk 2 will debut on Windows PC on September 20, 2024. You can find it on Steam, the Microsoft Store, GOG, and the Epic Games Store. It’s also set for release day one on Xbox Game Pass. Additionally, Frostpunk 2 is planned for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 consoles, but not until a later time.

Frostpunk 2 is expanding the scope and politics of frozen survival

In Frostpunk 2, the expansion is immense compared to its first version, offering players a vast scope that involves overseeing a city housing tens of thousands of residents for multiple years. Novel elements include the option to build entire districts and the diplomatic and voting systems, where you balance political commitments towards various increasingly contentious factions.

Based on my recent experience playing Frostpunk 2, it’s clear that the developers have created something unique, far from sticking to familiar ground. Although I had reservations about the absence of certain personal aspects and quiet scenes that I appreciated in the first game, the team is addressing these concerns by incorporating a feature that enables players to closely examine daily life within their massive city by zooming in for a closer look.
