As a long-time comic book enthusiast and avid filmgoer, I must say that the revelation of Blake Lively as Lady Deadpool in “Deadpool & Wolverine” has been nothing short of exhilarating! The journey from Rob Liefeld’s initial sketch in 2010 to the big screen is a testament to the power of fate and the intricate web of connections that often permeate our favorite stories.
Blake Lively, known for her roles as Deadpool and Wolverine’s co-star, discussed her transformation into Lady Deadpool during a recent appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark. The actress, who also starred in It Ends With Us, traced her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut back to the early 2010s. Comics enthusiast Rob Liefeld reportedly based the character’s appearance on Lively, but the details were not yet finalized at that time. Eventually, Ryan Reynolds helped bring Lady Deadpool to life in the Deadpool & Wolverine movie, and fans are thrilled about it.
“Here’s an interesting twist: I didn’t know that Rob Liefeld, who drew LadyPool, also illustrated Lady Deadpool in 2010. At the same time, I was cast in ‘Green Lantern’, which was before I was married to my current husband. The connection might seem a bit confusing, but essentially, there was no link between Ryan, the person intended for Deadpool’s role, and Deadpool himself. The idea of him making that movie was more like a wishful thinking than a reality.”
Lively chuckled, “Rob Liefeld illustrated LadyPool, making me wonder if he and his wife were fans of ‘Gossip Girl.’ It’s quite amusing to think that around the same time, my husband and I got married, Deadpool was created. They were searching for a LadyPool character, you see.”
All Those Cameos Are Out There Now
Before Deadpool and Wolverine, discussions about cameos were abundant everywhere. In fact, Variety inquired about the character count Director Shawn Levy was considering for this specific film. The director revealed they had over 70 names on the list they could access. At first glance, that number seems astounding. However, they didn’t include every single Marvel hero from their roster.
When inquired about Ben Affleck’s Daredevil, Levy might respond, “At first, when we had a list of around 70 Marvel characters to consider, Daredevil was included. However, after our initial discussions, no further talks regarding him, such as outreach or offers, have taken place.”
In their work, Levy explained, they always ensured jokes involving anyone were previously approved by them. Whether it was written for a script or improvised on set, Ryan or I would check with performers first to ensure comfort and avoid making fun of vulnerable groups. The humor was always light-hearted and agreed upon by all parties involved. If Hugh and Jen didn’t find something funny, it wouldn’t make it into the movie.
