The Umbrella Academy stars thought shock season 4 romance twist “was a joke”

As a seasoned film enthusiast who’s seen more than a few unexpected twists and turns, I must say that The Umbrella Academy has outdone itself with this season! Episode 5 of Season 4, titled “Six Years, Five Months, and Two Days,” took me completely by surprise. Lila, Diego’s wife, and his brother Five, the time-traveling boy, struck up a most unusual romance while stuck in a waypoint between timelines (or the subway system).

Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Umbrella Academy season 4, particularly episode 5.

Was the unexpected romantic development between characters Lila (played by Ritu Arya) and Number Five (portrayed by Aidan Gallagher) in The Umbrella Academy season 4 a surprise to you? It seems it was a secret even to them!

In the fifth episode of this fresh season, titled “Six Years, Five Months, and Two Days,” I find myself unexpectedly drawn into a romantic entanglement. This involves Lila, who is wed to Diego (David Castañeda), and his brother Five. Our predicament unfolds when we become stranded in the transitional station between timelines (or the subway system).

Following decades of jumping between different time periods, they finally establish a permanent residence and develop a romantic bond. Later on, character Five discovers a method to return.

When I heard it, I actually chuckled and said, “Ha-ha,” but as I went through the script, I realized they were being serious!

Gallagher commented: “I had a similar response. Initially, it caught me off guard because the characters always appear to clash. However, there came a moment when everything clicked together, much like magnets. I found myself thinking, ‘Ah, that fits quite well with their personalities.'”

Arya continued, “I began reflecting on past seasons, and it seemed clear to me all along that this was going to occur!”

Gallagher inquired, “Did they possibly understand the events of those past seasons well in advance?” To which Arya responded, “Yes, I believe they had a plan all along.”

Switching to showrunner Steve Blackman, he shared this thought: “We pondered together with our writing team, ‘What if you’ve been away for seven years and have almost lost hope of returning home?'”

In simpler terms, certain aspects of their story revolve around the conflicts between Lila and Diego at home. Additionally, there’s a strong resemblance between Five and Lila that they wouldn’t necessarily want to acknowledge, which plays a role in the narrative as well.

Despite their fierce competition throughout multiple seasons, they discovered surprising commonalities when apart. Indeed, they share many similar traits as individuals.

“I’m curious about how the fans will perceive that instance. However, I believe it’s a well-deserved one. Consider this; they haven’t just been together for a few days, but have been striving to survive for an impressive seven years. In my opinion, it was a fantastic and significant moment.”

As for whether fans will agree, only time will tell.

The Umbrella Academy seasons 1-4 are streaming now on Netflix.
