As a dedicated AEW fan who has witnessed the highs and lows of Kenny Omega and Kota Ibushi‘s careers, it’s hard not to feel a pang of disappointment when they both find themselves on the sidelines due to unfortunate health issues. Yet, their unwavering spirit and determination to return to the ring are truly inspiring.
In recent times, two exceptional narrative architects of All Elite Wrestling (AEW) have had to step away due to prolonged injuries, a recurring issue within the company. Kenny Omega was afflicted by a severe case of diverticulitis last December, keeping him hospitalized for a considerable period. He subsequently underwent surgery and has been recuperating since then. Similarly, Kota Ibushi, who joined AEW last year, has faced personal health challenges. He’s currently active with DDT Pro-Wrestling again, leading to speculation about his current role within AEW following his return to wrestling.
Ibushi reassured fans on social media who thought he wouldn’t return since Omega is no longer around, stating that AEW remains his home. He hinted at a strong comeback featuring Kenny, as he put it, “My home is AEW. Expect a full comeback with Kenny.”
It’s been more than two years since Ibushi was last seen in the wrestling ring, leading some to speculate that he had retired permanently. However, in early 2023, he made a surprise return, participating in GCW during their event in Los Angeles over The Collective weekend. Four months later, he made his AEW debut at Blood & Guts, joining forces with The Elite. Since then, he has competed in two pay-per-view events: AEW All In last August and WrestleDream in October. His most recent match for AEW was a Street Fight against The Don Callis Family on AEW Dynamite last November.
Initially, Omega found himself in an unusual predicament when he sustained injuries unknowingly. This unexpected turn led him to be teamed up with Chris Jericho, and they were set for a tag team championship match. Due to some disagreements, Omega found himself at odds with The Young Bucks. Despite not stepping into the ring yet, Omega has made occasional TV appearances to maintain his role in the storyline.
Despite it not succeeding, the adorned tag team continues to wreak havoc within AEW, with Kazuchika Okada and Jack Perry leading the charge. As for Omega and Ibushi’s return, there’s no definite schedule as of now, but in March, AEW CEO Tony Khan expressed optimism to ComicBook about their future involvement.
“Khan expressed that he doesn’t want to hasten the recovery process as Omega was in a critical condition. He avoids setting any expectations for his return, but remains hopeful we’ll see him soon. It’s an exciting prospect for fans, and I believe everyone will be ecstatic when Omega makes his comeback, which we all eagerly anticipate.”
