As a seasoned sports enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that this collection of images from the 2024 Olympics is nothing short of a visual feast! Even under the weather, Noah Lyles brought home another medal for Team USA.
Following my heart-pounding victory at the 200-meter final in Paris, I found myself gasping for breath and sprawled out on the track. In no time, kind medics were by my side, helping me up from the track with a wheelchair. A spokesperson shared that I was unable to walk on my own after exerting all my might during the race. As an ardent fan, every bit of this experience felt surreal and unforgettable!
Yet, it was his mother, Keisha Cane Bishop, who enthusiastically encouraged him at the race, who swiftly provided details about his health situation. She shared with NBC Sports’ Lewis Johnson that her son had received a COVID-19 diagnosis exactly two days prior to his final event.
Later on, the star from Team USA, who had previously clinched a gold medal in the men’s 100-meter race, went on to discuss his wellbeing.
“He shared that on Tuesday at around 5 in the morning, he had an early wake-up call. He wasn’t feeling well, beyond just being tired from his 100. Concerned, he contacted the doctors who ran a test, and unfortunately, the results showed that he tested positive for COVID-19.”
However, even with the diagnosis, Noah remained focused, as he continued to chase after gold medals in both the 100m sprint and 200m sprint.
Initially, he didn’t let fear take over, recalling past tougher circumstances and challenging conditions. He then approached each day with cautious optimism, focusing on staying hydrated and isolating when necessary. Undeniably, the experience has been demanding, but he has never felt more self-accomplished. After all, securing a bronze medal in these Olympics is something he can be incredibly proud of, especially considering his disappointing performance in the last games.
And on whether it ever occurred to him to not run the 200 final, Noah gave an emphatic no.
As a former athlete myself, I can appreciate the dedication and focus that goes into training for major competitions like the Olympics. The world champion’s comments about his future at this year’s Games caught my attention, especially since he mentioned that he will be competing as part of the men’s 4x100m relay team.
“He admitted at this stage he was unsure about his participation since the final event was set for August 9. He seemed inclined to let Team USA take charge, as they’ve demonstrated their ability to handle it efficiently without him. If that’s the case, he felt comfortable saying, ‘You guys are fast enough to win the gold medal.'”
In the end, during the 200-meter final race, Noah was defeated by Kenny Bednarek from Team USA, who won the silver medal, and Letsile Tebogo of Botswana, who claimed the gold.
Not only did Letshie make history as the first African athlete to triumph in this event, but his emotional victory was further enriched by the fact that he ran in honor of his late mother.
