What you need to know

  • DOOM Eternal first launched back in March 2020 on Xbox One, Windows PC, and PlayStation 4, with developer id Software providing an upgraded version for the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
  • DOOM Eternal is getting official mod support, as id Software is publishing the same toolkit used in the game’s development, allowing players to more easily create and publish their own mods.
  • Mod support is currently opt-in with a Steam beta branch, and is also coming to the Microsoft Store via the Xbox Insider Program.

As a tech enthusiast who has been following the DOOM series since its early days, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and nostalgia at the news that DOOM Eternal is getting official mod support. The fact that id Software is making the same toolkit used in the game’s development available to players speaks volumes about their commitment to the community.

One of the biggest games of 2020 is about to get even bigger through community efforts.

At this year’s QuakeCon 2024 launch event, I was thrilled to learn that id Software has decided to offer official mod support for DOOM Eternal! They’re even releasing the same toolkit they used to create the game, giving us players an opportunity to effortlessly design and share our very own mods.

At present, the mod system for DOOM Eternal is under a trial phase while the team collects user feedback. If you’re keen to experience it early, you can opt in and give it a try. To participate in the DOOM Eternal mod preview, ensure that you own DOOM Eternal on Steam or Microsoft Store, or subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass.

Analysis: DOOM continues to grow

It’s truly remarkable that such developments are still taking place well past the game’s release date, which underscores the enduring popularity of the DOOM franchise. Moreover, the package deal of both DOOM and DOOM II adds fuel to the fire, indicating a strong and persistent fanbase for DOOM.

Next year won’t bring any changes regarding DOOM: The Dark Ages; instead, it’s on its way. I find myself green with envy towards the QuakeCon 2024 attendees who were fortunate enough to witness a fresh gameplay segment, and what I’ve heard about it is simply astounding. I eagerly await more updates as the reveal trailer has piqued my curiosity intensely.
