As a seasoned sports enthusiast and armchair spectator, I must say that the spirit of the Olympics is truly alive and well! Witnessing these athletes from all over the world showcasing their skills, resilience, and determination is nothing short of inspiring.
Turns out quiet makes Suni Lee feel off balance.
In the 2024 Olympics, the U.S. gymnast who bagged two bronze medals and a gold medal revealed the reasons behind her fall from the balance beam, along with her teammate, the renowned Simone Biles, during their August 5th competition in Paris.
Suni shared with reporters later on, “It’s incredibly quiet up there. I dislike it since it leaves me with far too much time for contemplation, and I can hear every little sound.”
The combination of tension and tranquility posed challenges for the gymnasts, among them being Sabrina Voinea from Romania, who too experienced a fall due to these circumstances.
The 21-year-old went on, expressing fondness for the excitement. They disliked quiet moments; they found them unappealing. Instead, they flourish with the crowd’s vitality, so the enthusiasm from the audience, particularly after performing a routine, is incredibly beneficial to them.
Suni playfully commented, “I felt like everyone could actually hear me breathe up there,” implying her concern that her breaths were audible to others.
Simone doubled down on how the quiet impacted her.
She shared with reporters, via NBC News, that the final beam is typically the most tension-filled. However, they usually have some kind of music or ambient sound playing in the background.
The 27-year-old mentioned that gymnasts tend to perform better in noisy surroundings as it mimics their training environment the most.
She went on to say that the event was quite uncomfortable and unusual for everyone present. We’ve inquired multiple times about having some music or background noise, but nothing changed. To be honest, none of us enjoyed it. It was indeed a strange beam final.
As an ardent fan, I couldn’t help but marvel at the exceptional performance during the balance beam competition. While some may have faced challenges, it was a different story for Team Italy’s Alice D’Amato, who triumphantly claimed the gold. China’s Zhou Yaqin displayed an impressive show, securing the silver medal, and my fellow Italian gymnast, Manila Esposito, gracefully earned the bronze. What a display of skill and determination!
Fortunately, the Olympians are maintaining a light-hearted attitude towards their falls. In fact, Suni has joined a popular TikTok trend by posting a video on August 6th of her stumble, humorously captioning it, “regrettably, I was chosen for the Olympics.”
I couldn’t help but feel a wave of exhilaration as I shared my Instagram posts, chronicling the incredible journey that led me to become a two-time Olympian and six-time Olympic medalist on August 5th.
