As a gamer who grew up with the magical world of Lilo & Stitch, I can’t help but feel like a kid at Christmas time when Disney announced the live-action film. The original animated movie was not just a fun adventure for me, but it was also a window into another culture and an important part of my childhood memories.
At this year’s D23 exhibition, Disney unveiled sneak peeks of various upcoming ventures, among them being the long-awaited live-action adaptation of Lilo and Stitch. Initially given the go-ahead in 2018, the production was delayed due to the global pandemic in 2020 and subsequent writers’ and actors’ strikes. Now, after a hiatus, cherished characters like Lilo, Stitch, Nani (her older sister and guardian), David, Pleakley, and Jumba Jookiba are set to grace our movie screens once more.

In the production process, numerous obstacles arose, one of which involved the cast itself. Disney chose Sydney Agudong to play Nani, but faced allegations of colorism due to her being lighter than the animated version of Nani who has much darker skin. Additionally, Kahiau Machado was initially assigned the role of David, however, offensive racial slurs on his social media accounts were discovered, leading to a recast. Instead, Kaipot Dudoit took over as Nani’s romantic interest in the film.
In the year 2002, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures unveiled the heartwarming comedy film titled “Lilo & Stitch,” centered around a young native Hawaiian girl named Lilo. Mistaking an extraterrestrial being for a dog, she adopts him, only to learn that Stitch is actually a genetically engineered experiment from a distant alien planet. He had crash-landed on Earth and was hiding. As they grow closer, the pair embarks on numerous escapades, chronicled in the popular Disney Channel animated series “Lilo & Stitch.” The film grossed more than $200 million at the box office and spawned two seasons, airing from 2003 to 2005 with 30 episodes per season. Despite being over two decades old, it continues to influence pop culture by captivating multiple generations of fans.
In the upcoming live-action adaptation, several voice actors from the original projects will reappear in various roles. For instance, Chris Sanders will continue to voice Stitch. Tia Carrere, known for her role as Nani in the initial film, will portray Mrs. Kekoa. Additionally, Amy Hill, who previously voiced Mrs. Hasagawa, will take on the character of T?t?, a new addition to the franchise. The role of Lilo will be played by eight-year-old actress Maia Kealoha, marking her first acting gig in this live-action film. Dean Fleischer Camp is directing, while Chris Kekaniokalani Bright, Dean DeBlois, and original creator Sanders have contributed to the script.
As a longtime fan of Disney movies, I am beyond excited about the upcoming live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch! Growing up, this animated film was one of my all-time favorites, and I still watch it whenever I need a pick-me-up. The heartwarming story of a Hawaiian girl and her mischievous alien friend resonated with me deeply, and the catchy songs are still stuck in my head to this day.
