What you need to know
- Capcom has just revealed the sixth weapon overview trailer for its highly-anticipated action-hunting game, Monster Hunter Wilds.
- This trailer provides a demonstration of the Long Sword, a fast and nimble weapon type that allows the player to enter counter stances to parry enemy attacks and unleash a flurry of melee combos capable of cutting off body parts.
- Monster Hunter Wilds will release in 2025 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam.
As a seasoned veteran of the Monster Hunter franchise, I must say that the latest reveal from Capcom has me more than just a little excited. The Long Sword, with its Samurai-inspired moveset and unique Spirit Gauge mechanic, is a weapon type that I’ve always found appealing. The new additions to its move-set in Monster Hunter Wilds look promising, offering subtle yet effective extensions to an already solid arsenal.
Today, Capcom unveiled a fresh gameplay overview for Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, the upcoming installment in the renowned action-hunting series, Monster Hunter. This trailer spotlights the Long Sword, transforming players into Samurai warriors, as they wield an imposing Ōdachi – a colossal Japanese sword traditionally used to fell horsemen. With this weapon, you can parry incoming attacks and detach critical body parts such as tails or wings from monstrous foes.
The Long Sword’s attack patterns include extended reach strikes suitable for both single attacks and complex combinations, inflicting significant harm on enemies. It also includes agile dodges to avoid enemy attacks at the last moment, and stances where you can sheathe the sword only to unleash it instantaneously upon an enemy strike, nullifying damage and retaliating with a powerful counterattack that leaves monsters writhing in pain.
In addition to its long blade, this weapon boasts an exclusive meter system known as the Spirit Meter. By striking monsters with regular physical attacks, you’ll accumulate energy in this meter. This stored energy can then be utilized to trigger powerful Spirit Slash abilities.
If you successfully perform a complete Spirit Slash sequence, the Spirit Meter’s color will progress (from White, then Yellow, to Red). Each time it changes color, your attacks will grow more potent. When the Spirit Meter is fully charged, that’s when you can use the Long Sword’s powerful final move called the Spirit Helm Breaker. This attack depletes levels from the Spirit Meter to inflict incredibly high damage.
In essence, based on the gameplay trailer, the Long Sword appears to perform similarly to its function in Monster Hunter World. However, there are a few significant new gameplay elements that have been introduced for the Long Sword, as follows:
- A quicker version of the Fade Slash side-step attack which can lead to a Spirit Slash combo.
- New attacks that can extend regular melee combos and make the player do a 180-degree turn to attack monsters that have jumped behind them.
- A Focus Strike where you stab a monster’s weak point or wounds, and then following up with an overhead slash and an uppercut slash.
- A new Spirit Slash Counter stance and a new follow-up attack that can be performed after the Spirit Helm Breaker.
Are you motivated to unleash the power of the Long Sword in Monster Hunter Wilds?
As a tech-savvy fanatic, I’d have to say that the Long Sword is undeniably one of the crowd favorites in the Monster Hunter series. Its sleek strikes can slice through monstrous hides as if they were mere pieces of soft butter, and its extensive collection of counter moves makes every player feel like an invincible warrior, effortlessly deflecting any incoming assault.
Although the latest maneuvers for Long Sword might not be as spectacularly different as those added for Gunlance and Hunting Horn, I’m confident they will offer understated yet highly impactful enhancements to an already robust move selection for this weapon type.
In its latest update, Monster Hunter World’s Long Sword provides an enhanced array of defensive and attacking strategies, giving players additional resources to navigate and combat the diverse range of colossal beasts in the game.
In 2025, Monster Hunter Wilds – the follow-up to Capcom’s highly popular Xbox and PC games like Monster Hunter World – is set to debut on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and personal computers through Steam.
