PlayStation Store Finally Letting Players Review Games

As a long-time PlayStation gamer who has spent countless hours exploring virtual worlds and battling digital foes, I must say that the addition of written game reviews to the PlayStation Store is a much-needed and welcome change! For years, we’ve had the star ratings system, but the absence of actual user reviews has left us wanting more insight into games before making a purchase.

It appears that the PlayStation Store is now following suit with Xbox and Steam marketplaces by enabling users to post written game reviews. While the five-star rating system has been available on the PlayStation Store for some time, this update includes detailed written feedback for games. At the moment, it seems like this feature is being gradually introduced to a select group of users via an invitation system, and the reviews are not yet visible to all users, but it’s clear that this functionality is in development.

A Reddit user named cusman78 highlighted a novel aspect in a PlayStation community forum, expressing that they couldn’t leave reviews for specific PlayStation games even when invited to do so. They received an email asking them to review Helldivers 2, attaching a screenshot of the review platform as proof. Users can rate the game from one to five stars, title their reviews, and write detailed opinions. There’s also an option to label whether the reviews contain spoilers, with potentially hidden text if marked as such.

When did PlayStation start allowing written reviews? Seems to only be allowed for few games on their store pages for now.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed an odd pattern: sometimes I can leave a review for a game and other times I can’t, even though I see others posting their thoughts. It seems that whether you own the game physically or digitally might play a role in this. Some users have mentioned receiving emails about different games but not being able to write reviews for all of them. Strangely enough, I can see star ratings for some games on the PlayStation Store’s web version, but when it comes to Helldivers 2, there are no written user reviews displayed at this time, only the star rankings.

As a long-time gamer with years of experience across multiple platforms, I believe introducing player review hours on the PlayStation interface would be a valuable addition, assuming it’s implemented effectively. In my own gaming journey, I’ve come to appreciate the insights that the number of hours played can provide when evaluating games. For instance, on Steam, seeing how many hours someone has invested in a game gives me a sense of their level of engagement and commitment. If this feature is carried over to PlayStation, it would help me make more informed decisions about which titles to invest my time into. I eagerly await its introduction and hope that Sony will find a way to present the information in an intuitive and user-friendly manner.

Additionally, there’s a potential issue where reviews might be employed for irrelevant or unhelpful reasons. For instance, review bombing on Steam is indeed a problem (although reverse situations can occur as well), and such activities render the reviews virtually useless during the duration of these campaigns. Similarly, on the Xbox Store, users often resort to reviews to air their grievances or express highly specific views.

At present, it seems we don’t have a clear timeline about when PlayStation Store users can start writing reviews for games. However, please check your email regularly as you might be selected to review a game that you already own.
