Crawl 2: Sequel to Alligator Thriller Being Developed

As a seasoned gamer and horror movie enthusiast who has survived countless virtual nightmares, I can confidently say that I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming sequel to Crawl! Having battled my fair share of digital alligators, I can only imagine the adrenaline-pumping experience the sequel will bring.

Prepare yourself to shudder at the sight of water once more, as Paramount Pictures are busy creating a follow-up to the successful alligator chiller Crawl. According to THR, Paramount is actively working on the development of Crawl 2, a sequel to the popular horror movie from 2019, and plans to begin filming in Europe this fall. The original director Alexandre Aja will return for the sequel, along with producers Craig Flores and Sam Raimi. Andrew Deutschman and Jason Pagan, the writers behind Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension and Project Almanac, are working on the script, but a release date has not been announced yet.

New People, New Location

Crawl 2: Sequel to Alligator Thriller Being Developed

Originally penned by Michael and Shawn Rasmussen, “Crawl” showcased Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper in leading roles. However, the upcoming sequel will introduce a fresh ensemble of actors. As per reports, instead of Florida, Crawl 2 is set to take place in the bustling metropolis of New York City. The first movie centered around Haley (Scodelario) and her father Dave (Pepper), who were battling to survive a hurricane, only to find themselves trapped with a deadly alligator within their home.

As the movie unfolds, not only does the hurricane persist as a challenge, but there are multiple alligators to deal with too, and no one nearby for assistance. Remarkably, Haley manages to endure this ordeal, yet it appears that the next installment will shift its focus onto a new set of characters. In an earlier conversation with Bloody Disgusting’s Book Crew Podcast, Aja hinted at potential further development for Haley as a character while also suggesting a fresh storyline for a future film.

Aja mentioned that Haley’s tale is exceptionally powerful, but Crawl appears to revolve around nature reclaiming its rightful place, and it could be likened to… a more hurricane-focused story, with man vs. animal as the central theme. In essence, it seems like a different story entirely compared to the first one at present. What we’re seeking now is another human narrative that can match the strength of the original tale to ensure the sequel maintains its validity.

Small Budget, Big Box Office

On a budget of less than $14 million, the movie “Crawl” managed to earn over double its production cost with a box office revenue of $91.5 million. Given the success of horror films in recent years, a sequel, “Crawl 2,” might even surpass the earnings of the original. If it proves profitable again, we could potentially see more anthology-style “Crawl” movies similar to successful franchises like “Paranormal Activity” and “Final Destination.” However, we’ll have to wait and find out.
