New Trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King Released

As a gamer who’s been through countless adventures, battles, and quests, I must say that Mufasa: The Lion King prequel has piqued my interest like no other. Growing up with the original Lion King, I’ve always wondered about the backstory of Mufasa – how he became the noble king we knew and loved. This new take on his early days, complete with a complex bond between him and Scar, offers an intriguing twist that makes me eager to explore this world once more.

At Disney’s action-packed D23 presentation, a sneak peek at several eagerly awaited projects was unveiled, among them being the upcoming prequel movie titled “Mufasa: The Lion King.” As the title implies, this film delves into Mufasa’s youthful years and his path to becoming the ruler of the Pridelands. The trailer hints at some captivating new developments in the story.

Big Changes

In the initial version of The Lion King, Scar seizes the throne following the murder of Mufasa and attempting to pin Simba’s death on him. However, when we discover that they were very close during most of their younger years, and it was actually Taka who encouraged his family to welcome Mufasa into their lives after a fortuitous meeting, these events take on a deeper and more emotional significance.

The trailer depicts the duo developing a strong bond, with Taka expressing his long-held desire for a brother-like figure in Mufasa. They engage in various mischievous activities throughout their journey, but Taka must resist his family’s pressure to disregard kinship rules by allowing Mufasa to stay close. This defiance leads to them confronting the growing menace of Kiros, portrayed by Mads Mikkelsen. The circumstances that eventually lead to their estrangement are yet to be revealed, as there are multiple interpretations in other sources.

During an interview with Reader’s Digest, The Lion King’s producer Don Hahn explained that it was plausible for Scar and Mufasa to have different parents due to the natural behavior of lions in the wild. He noted that as a male lion ages, another dominant male may kill him, triggering the female lions to go into heat. The new, younger lion then murders the king and any offspring, establishing himself as the new ruler of the pride.

Hahn explained, “There’s often a unique situation with two male lions, you know? Sometimes, prides may have two males, but since they don’t share the same parents, their relationship isn’t equal. One lion usually stays in the background. We wanted to base our story on such animal truths, so we thought it wouldn’t be feasible for Scar and Mufasa to come from the same genetic lineage.”

What Is Mufasa About?

“In ‘The Lion King’, Mufasa asks Rafiki to share the tale of his life with Kiara, Simba and Nala’s daughter. Accompanied by Timon and Pumbaa, the story unfolds through flashbacks. We discover that as a young cub, Mufasa was an orphan who befriended Taka, a lion from a royal lineage. From this casual encounter, a diverse band of outcasts embarks on a grand adventure to uncover their fate. Their friendship will face trials as they struggle together against a formidable and dangerous enemy.”

In the movie “The Lion King,” we have Aaron Pierre lending his voice as Mufasa, Kelvin Harrison Jr. voicing both Taka and Scar, John Kani as Rafiki, Kagiso Lediga as Young Rafiki, Billy Eichner portraying Timon, Seth Rogen playing Pumba, Blue Ivy Carter as Kiara, Tiffany Boone as Sarabi, Thandiwe Newton as Eshe, Lennie James as Obasi, Anika Noni Rose as Afia, and Keith David, Masego, and Mads Mikkelsen voicing the character Kiros.

Mufasa: The Lion King hits theaters on December 20th.
