As a longtime Disney enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of their theme parks over the years, I must say that the upcoming expansion of Disney California Adventure to include an Avatar-themed area is nothing short of breathtaking. Having grown up watching the first film and being captivated by the world of Pandora, the thought of stepping into this immersive experience fills me with childlike excitement.
Directly from the Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase at D23, the ultimate Disney fan event, Disney has confirmed an expansion of the Avatar universe right here on Earth! The Disney California Adventure park will transform and welcome a new Avatar-themed area inspired by “Avatar: The Way of Water” and future sequels like the recently titled “Avatar: Fire and Ash.” This new area promises to deliver a thrilling, intense, and emotional experience. Guests will not only be able to explore Pandora’s diverse ecosystems but also embark on a ride that reveals the depths of its seas teeming with incredible creatures like the Tulkun, resembling whales.
Ali Rubenstein, Executive Global Management-Creative Development at Walt Disney Imagineering shared on stage, “We’re venturing with our visitors to an entirely fresh location on Pandora. You might recall that our Florida site is nestled within a rainforest surrounded by the floating mountains in the Mo’ara Valley, evoking the atmosphere of the first Avatar film, ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender.’ Our upcoming destination draws inspiration from the second movie, ‘The Way of Water,’ as well as future films like ‘Fire and Ash.’ This new locale will not only match the grandeur and epic nature of these stories but will also introduce a groundbreaking new attraction that promises to immerse guests in the action, excitement, and magic of Avatar like never before.”
She went on to say, “We’re extending invitations for an unforgettable journey! We’ll embark on an expedition to explore the breathtaking landscapes unique to Pandora. As we traverse through lush forests teeming with amazing creatures and bioluminescent plants, we’ll eventually reach the vast oceans of Pandora. While this world is stunningly beautiful, it can be treacherous if we get lost. This adventure promises to be thrilling, intense, and emotionally engaging on a massive scale – an experience that we believe you, our guests, will adore!”
Prior to unveiling the latest expansion of Pandora at Disney’s California Adventure, there was a heartfelt tribute paid to Jon Landau, the producer of the Avatar series, who sadly passed away on July 5th this year.
“Let me pause to pay tribute to Jon Landau, a member of the Lightstorm team who recently passed away. As producer of both Avatar films, John played a crucial role in helping Disney Imagineers bring Pandora to life within our theme parks. During the development of the Avatar land at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, I had the privilege of working closely with him and witnessing his unparalleled passion and creativity up close. Jon held Disney Parks in high regard, enjoyed collaborating with Imagineers, and was eagerly looking forward to working with them on our next Avatar experience.” – Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 19, 2025.
