Take-Two Doesn’t Believe Offering AAA Titles on Subscription Services Day and Date is “Rational”

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen the gaming landscape evolve at a breakneck pace. From cartridges to CD-ROMs, discs to digital downloads, and now subscription services – it’s been quite a ride! However, one constant in this ever-changing world has been Take-Two Interactive. They’ve always stood firm against the tide, refusing to bow down to the pressures of day-and-date releases on platforms like Game Pass.

In recent years, many publishers have experimented with releasing major titles on subscription services like Game Pass on the day they come out. However, one notable exception is Take-Two Interactive, the company behind Rockstar Games and 2K. So far, Take-Two has consistently refused to adopt this business model, claiming it doesn’t align with their strategies, and there’s no sign of them changing course any time soon.

In a conversation with GamesIndustry, when asked about how releasing a major game like the upcoming “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6” on Game Pass simultaneously would affect consumer behavior, he suggested that there could be a temporary move towards subscription models.

He stated that providing an exclusive upfront title at a higher cost within a subscription service on its release date could tempt consumers to subscribe to the service for a while.

In other words, according to Zelnick, Take-Two Interactive Software won’t make its top-tier games available through subscription services at launch, as he perceives it as an irrational move.

“No, it won’t affect our decisions,” he said. “Because our decisions are rational.”

At present, Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. is working on several significant game projects. These include the anticipated titles like “Grand Theft Auto 6” from Rockstar Games and a revamp of “Max Payne 1 and 2,” developed by Remedy Entertainment. Additionally, Firaxis Games is said to be developing “Civilization 7.” There are also unconfirmed rumors about upcoming games such as “Borderlands 4” and “Mafia 4.”
